Yordan Álvarez concluded a historic season this Sunday by winning the American League batting title 2026 with an average of .316, becoming the fourth player born in Cuba to achieve this honor in the entire history of Major League Baseball.
The designated hitter for the Houston Astros, originally from Las Tunas, completed an elite season that included 42 home runs, 105 RBIs, 104 runs scored, and an OPS of 1.036 in 563 at-bats, numbers that position him as the overwhelming favorite for the American League MVP award.
Álvarez thus joins a very select group of Cuban players who have excelled in the batting department in MLB. Journalist Francys Romero summed up the milestone in a few words: "A historic 2026 season for Álvarez."
The first to pave the way was Tony Oliva, who achieved it three times with the Minnesota Twins: he batted .323 in 1964, .321 in 1965, and .337 in 1971, also being the first player in MLB history to win batting titles in his first two complete seasons. Oliva, born in Pinar del Río, was inducted into the Cooperstown Hall of Fame with the class of 2022.
Half a century after Oliva's feats, Yuli Gurriel brought Cuba back to the top of that department by winning the batting title in 2021 with an average of .319, also in the American League.
Two years later, Yandy Díaz claimed the title with .330 for the Tampa Bay Rays, becoming the first player in that franchise to achieve it. Now Álvarez completes the list with his .316 in 2026.
The season for the Las Tunas player was marked by a pursuit of the Triple Crown. In August, he simultaneously led in batting average (.330), home runs (35), and RBIs (84), generating tremendous anticipation throughout the league. Although he ultimately did not complete that trio, he did secure the batting title and the favoritism for the MVP, leading the final voting with 181 points and 29 first-place votes.
Throughout the season, Álvarez was also named American League Player of the Month on two occasions: in March/April and in July. In September, he broke his personal home run record by surpassing 38 and finished with 42.
In accumulated terms throughout his career, the Astros player boasts a .300 batting average, 212 home runs, 598 runs batted in, and an OPS of .976 since his debut in June 2019.
