The Cuban baseball player Yordan Álvarez became the third player born in Cuba to win two Player of the Month Awards in a single Major League season, after receiving the award from the American League for July 2026.
The designated hitter for the Houston Astros, born in Las Tunas, thus joins José Abreu (April and July 2014) and Rafael Palmeiro (June and August 1999) in an exclusive group that no other player from the island has been part of until now, according to journalist Francys Romero.
Álvarez closed July with outstanding numbers: .360 batting average, nine home runs, and 22 RBIs, figures that unequivocally supported his second monthly award of the season.
He had conquered the first one in March and April when he batted .356 with 12 home runs, 27 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.199 in 32 games, dominating multiple offensive categories across all of MLB.
Romero summarized the historical significance of the achievement: "Yordan Álvarez joined José Abreu (2014) and Rafael Palmeiro (1999) as the only players born in Cuba to win two Player of the Month awards in the same MLB season."
Beyond the monthly award, the accumulated statistics of the player from Tunero indicate a season of historic levels.
By the end of July, Álvarez was leading the American League with .330 batting average, 35 home runs, and 84 RBIs, the three categories that define the Triple Crown, a feat that has not been seen in that league since Miguel Cabrera accomplished it in 2012.
His production pace suggests he will exceed 50 home runs before the end of the season, which would break the franchise record for Houston of 47, set by Jeff Bagwell in 2000.
On July 10, he had already made history by becoming the first batter in the American League to reach 30 home runs in the 2026 season, and was selected for this year's All-Star Game along with other Cuban players.
The other two members of the club have equally remarkable backgrounds.
Abreu was the unanimous American League Rookie of the Year in 2014 with the Chicago White Sox, a season in which he finished with a .317 batting average, 36 home runs, and 107 RBIs.
Palmeiro, born in Havana, was one of the most consistent hitters of his era with the Texas Rangers in the late 1990s.
Álvarez, who made his MLB debut in 2019, already has in his record the American League Rookie of the Year, the MVP of the 2021 Championship Series, the title of the 2022 World Series, and the Silver Slugger of that same year, and kicked off August on a strong note as the favorite to win the MVP of the season.
