A collision between an electric scooter and a vehicle resulted in one death and another individual in critical condition early Sunday morning in Little Havana, as reported by the Miami Police to NBC6.
The accident occurred around 2:44 a.m. at the intersection of Southwest 22nd Avenue and First Street, where Miami Police officers and Miami Fire Rescue teams responded.
Upon arrival, the rescuers found an adult woman and man lying on the road and unconscious. Both were transported in extremely critical condition to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
One of them later died from his injuries, while the other remained hospitalized in critical condition. The authorities had not revealed their identities at the time of the reports.
Images captured at the scene showed a red SUV with a shattered windshield and a damaged scooter on the roadway. The police did not provide details on how the impact occurred or about the driver of the vehicle.
The accident brings attention back to the risks of that intersection. Business owners in the area told NBC6 that at least 10 vehicles travel in the wrong direction through that crossing every day.
The tragedy occurs just a week after another accident between a motorcycle and a scooter in Little Havana left two people severely injured. In that case, a 28-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were also taken to Ryder Trauma Center.
September has seen several fatal accidents in Miami that have directly affected the Cuban community. Just one day before this tragedy, Cuban businessman Carlos Blanco died in a multiple collision in Doral. Earlier in the month, five Cuban workers lost their lives in an accident at Miami airport.
The increase in the use of scooters and other micro-mobility vehicles is also a concern for health authorities in South Florida. Memorial Healthcare System reported a 178% rise in trauma alerts related to bicycles and electric scooters between 2024 and 2025, a trend that has continued through 2026.
The investigation into Sunday's accident remains open. So far, the police have not reported any charges or arrests related to the case.
