opens this Tuesday, September 29, with new price increases for the dollar and the euro.

At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the U.S. dollar starts at 748 Cuban pesos, five pesos above yesterday's close, while the euro climbs to 852 pesos, also with a gain of five pesos compared to the previous day.

The Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), for its part, is experiencing a decline, although its data is scarce during this time period and should be taken as indicative.

Summary of informal market rates

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 748 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 852 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 508 CUP (reference value, few data available).

The dollar is at a 30-day high

The US dollar is traded at 748 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market. This represents an increase of five pesos compared to the previous day, when it was at 743 CUP.

Exchange Rate Evolution

The upward trend is clearly maintained on the weekly horizon: seven days ago, the greenback was trading at 718 pesos, which represents an increase of 30 pesos during that period, equivalent to a rise of 4.2%.

In terms of the monthly comparison, 30 days ago the dollar was at 675 pesos.

The current difference of 73 pesos increase —10.8% more— may reflect both actual market movement and adjustments in the index methodology, so it is wise to interpret it with caution.

Today's value, 748 CUP, also coincides with the highest recorded in the last 30 days, which strengthens the dollar as the currency that exerts the most pressure on the Cuban peso.

The euro also reaches its monthly peak

The euro, for its part, starts this Tuesday at 852 Cuban pesos (CUP), five pesos above the 847 recorded in the previous session.

In the weekly comparison, the European currency has gained 31 pesos since the 821 CUP recorded seven days ago, an increase of 3.8%.

Compared to 30 days ago, when it was quoted at 763 pesos, the difference amounts to 89 pesos —an increase of 11.7%—, although, similar to the dollar, this monthly variation may include methodological adjustments of the index.

Today's value, 852 CUP, is also the highest in the last 30 days for this currency.

The euro surpasses the dollar by 104 pesos and maintains the highest exchange rate between the two currencies in the informal Cuban market.

The MLC, with indicative and declining data

The MLC is situated at an average value of 508 Cuban pesos (CUP), although the data available during this time frame is limited, so this figure should be considered indicative.

Compared to the previous day, when it was recorded at 533 CUP, the figure represents a decrease of 25 pesos, equivalent to a decline of 4.7%.

In the weekly comparison, however, the MLC has seen a slight increase of 6 pesos from the 502 CUP recorded seven days ago.

Thirty days ago, it was priced at 468 pesos, and the highest in the last 30 days reached 547 CUP.

Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-owned businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

The gap with the official rate is widening increasingly

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 681 CUP per dollar and 775 CUP per euro, remains significantly lower than the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.

The difference between the official price and the informal one today reaches 67 pesos for the dollar and 77 pesos for the euro, a gap that illustrates the divide between the formal economy and the reality that Cubans face every day.

Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market, and it fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.

The evolution of the official rate in the last month —the dollar went from 634 to 681 CUP and the euro from 735 to 775 CUP— reflects a sustained depreciation of the peso also in the official channel, although at a pace much lower than that of the parallel market.
