Arianne Betancourt, 33 years old and daughter of the Cuban Justo Betancourt —who spent more than six months detained in the controversial Alligator Alcatraz immigration center— confronted the Republican congresswoman María Elvira Salazar during a community event in Miami last Saturday, in a tense exchange that was recorded on video.
The moment was captured by immigrant rights activist Thomas Kennedy and posted on his X account.
"He really abandoned the community."
When she began to speak, Arianne introduced herself to Salazar directly: "My name is Arianne Betancourt. My father was at Alligator Alcatraz. I and several people here have been to your office several times. Your chief of staff told us that you fully support this administration and its policies."
Then she went straight to the main complaint: “She really abandoned the community.”
Salazar replied that Arianne never wanted to come to his office: "You never came to the office. You didn't want to come to the office."
Arianne rejected that argument: "I didn't have to go to the office because I exposed the abuses myself. Then you went on television and defended Alligator Alcatraz."
When Salazar questioned whether Arianne and Kennedy were part of the district community, the young woman replied without hesitation: "We are part of the community, and I am one of its voters."
The most striking moment came when Arianne reminded Salazar of his own public statements: “You said that Alligator Alcatraz met the highest federal standards, didn’t you? You defended a concentration camp. You are an immoral person.”
An official from Salazar's office stated in the video that his team did offer assistance to Arianne, but she declined it.
"With six weeks to go until the midterm elections, Salazar is trying to adapt to the political ups and downs. But the reality is that he praised Alligator Alcatraz prison, claiming in several interviews that it met the highest federal standards, which is a lie," Kennedy wrote alongside the images.
The story of Justo Betancourt
Arianne's father has been living in the United States for over 36 years.
Betancourt has a criminal record: in 2016, he pleaded guilty in a federal court to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and a firearms-related offense, for which he received a prison sentence.
Years later, on October 29, 2025, he was arrested when he attended his annual routine appointment with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Miramar, Florida.
According to court documents, they had him sign a document in English that he did not understand, presenting it as an annual registration agreement when it was actually a self-deportation form.
Betancourt suffers from type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and schizophrenia; his daughter reported that at the facility they told him that "if he wanted insulin, he could get it in Mexico," and that he was often chained for up to 23 hours a day.
The federal judge Kyle Dudek granted a habeas corpus petition, determining that the detention was erroneous, and Betancourt was released in May from the Krome North Processing Center in a severely deteriorated physical state, with difficulties walking and slurred speech.
Days later, he was hospitalized with suspected mini-strokes.
Arianne resigned from her ten-year job in the tourism industry to fully dedicate herself to the campaign for her father's release.
The political context surrounding the conflict
The clash occurred during a time of significant political pressure for Salazar. On September 17, the congresswoman posted a bilingual video in front of the White House in which she told the president, "Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far."
Trump responded that he disagreed and that "Maria only won thanks to me."
On the eve of the confrontation with Arianne, Trump shared at least 14 posts on Truth Social from users attacking the congresswoman, including one that stated: "She is nothing more than someone who stabs you in the back."
An internal poll shows Salazar tied with the Democratic candidate in District 27, with 45% among likely voters, six weeks before the midterm elections.
