Doctor Ailenys Pérez Cepero, residing in Unión de Reyes, Matanzas, recovered her electric scooter weeks after two men assaulted her on the road, beat her, and fled with the vehicle and other belongings.
The motorcycle was recently returned to the doctor at her home, according to the Periódico Girón.
The violent incident occurred in early August, in the afternoon, when Pérez Cepero was traveling on the stretch of road between the Oliva estate and the municipal center of Unión de Reyes.
According to Radio 26, the assailants knocked down the doctor from the motorcycle, assaulted her, and fled the scene with the vehicle and other belongings.
The investigation later led to the province of Mayabeque, where pieces and other objects of the UNIZUKI motorbike were found.
Two men were arrested in their homes in the municipality of Nueva Paz: one in the area of the old Manuel Isla sugar mill and the other in Los Palos. Both remain in custody while the judicial process continues.
Major Yordany Apolinario Montes de Oca, head of the police unit in Unión de Reyes, stated that during the investigation, evidence was collected that allowed for the reconstruction of the route taken by the alleged perpetrators.
For his part, Yasiel Prado Valdés, the delegate of the Ministry of Interior (MININT) in the municipality, attributed the identification of the suspects to the evidence collected after the assault, the investigations carried out in the area, and the information provided by the victim herself.
Finally, agents from MININT transported the recovered motorcycle to Pérez Cepero's house, where it was handed over to the doctor in the presence of neighbors and colleagues.
The case of Pérez Cepero had an unusual outcome among the numerous reports of scooter thefts in Cuba: the vehicle was located and returned to its owner, and two suspects were arrested.
On social media and independent media, there are frequent reports from Cubans who report thefts, assaults, and other criminal acts, with little follow-up on the recovery of their belongings or the identification of the culprits.
Some of these episodes have also ended tragically, such as that of a young man who died in Cienfuegos during an attack to steal his electric scooter.
In June, three armed men invaded the home of a doctor in Guanabacoa, Havana, and stole money, jewelry, and a motorcycle.
Motorcycles have become an essential alternative for many Cubans due to the deterioration of public transportation and the ongoing fuel shortages. Their high price also means that losing one of these vehicles can be a significant financial blow for any family.
In the case of Pérez Cepero, recovering the motorcycle also means regaining a means of transportation that he uses in his daily life as a health professional.
