kicks off this Thursday, October 1, with upward pressure on the two main cash currencies.

At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the US dollar is rising strongly and the euro is following the trend, while the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) is experiencing a slight decline, although this data should be taken with caution due to the low volume of transactions during this time period.

Summary of exchange rates

  • Exchange rate of the USD to CUP: 763 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 867 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 490 CUP (indicative value, few data).

The dollar is rising

In the morning today, the US dollar is trading at 763 cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, marking an increase of nine pesos compared to the previous day, when it closed at 754 CUP.

In the past week, the greenback has risen by 37.5 pesos—5.2% more than seven days ago, when it was trading at 725 CUP.

Exchange Rate Evolution

Compared to 30 days ago, the price has risen by 85 pesos, although this month-to-month comparison may partially reflect adjustments in the index methodology rather than just market movement.

In the last 30 days, the dollar has fluctuated between a minimum of 678 CUP and the current maximum of 763 CUP.

The euro is also on the rise

The euro opens at 867 Cuban pesos (CUP), four pesos above the 863 CUP recorded the day before.

On a weekly basis, the European currency has risen by 38 pesos. This increase reflects a 4.6% rise compared to seven days ago, when it was exchanged at 829 CUP.

In the monthly outlook, the euro has gained 99.5 pesos; however, as with the dollar, this 30-day variation should be interpreted with caution due to possible methodological adjustments.

The euro reaches its highest point in the last 30 days today, with a low during that period of 765 CUP.

At this moment, it exceeds the dollar by 104 pesos, consolidating its dominant position in the Cuban parallel market.

The MLC is declining and with indicative data

The MLC is around 490 CUP, which represents a drop of 5 pesos compared to the previous day, when it was recorded at 495 CUP.

However, this value should be considered as indicative, since the source warns of a low volume of operations during this time period.

In the last week, the MLC has increased by 17.5 pesos from 473 CUP seven days ago.

In the last 30 days, it has fluctuated between a minimum of 415 CUP and a maximum of 547 CUP.

Without a physical existence, its use is limited to the state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

The gap with the official rate

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), set today at 689 CUP per dollar and 781 CUP per euro, remains far below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.

The gap between the official rate and the informal rate today reaches 74 pesos for the dollar and 86 pesos for the euro.

Although Segment III was presented as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains very distant from that of the informal market, and it fails to meet the actual foreign currency demand of the population.

In the last month, the official dollar has risen from 636 to 689 CUP, and the official euro from 739 to 781 CUP, an upward trend that, however, has not managed to close the gap with the parallel market.
