The unstoppable dollar
The US dollar is trading this Wednesday at 754 Cuban pesos (CUP) on the informal market, with a buying rate of 750 CUP and a selling rate of 757 CUP.
This represents an increase of 6 pesos compared to the previous day, when the average value was 748 CUP.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The upward trend is confirmed as the time horizon is extended: seven days ago, the dollar was trading at 722 pesos, representing an increase of 32 pesos in just one week, equivalent to a rise of 4.4%.
Compared to 30 days ago, when the exchange rate was around 678 pesos, the accumulated increase amounts to 76 pesos (+11.2%), though this month-to-month comparison may partially reflect adjustments in the methodology of the index and not just market movements.
The value of 754 pesos recorded today is also the highest in the last 30 days. The demand for dollars remains high among those looking to protect their savings from the depreciation of the peso.
The euro at 863 pesos
The euro starts this Wednesday with an average exchange rate of 863 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying price of 856 CUP and a selling price of 870 CUP.
Regarding the previous day, when the average value was 852 pesos, the euro rises by 11 pesos, an increase of 1.3%.
In the weekly perspective, the European currency has risen by 38 pesos from 825 CUP a week ago (+4.6%).
The 30-day comparison, which shows an increase of 98 pesos from 765 CUP (+12.8%), should be taken with the usual caution, as it may incorporate methodological adjustments to the index.
The level of 863 pesos is the highest recorded in the last month. It remains as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, exceeding the dollar by 109 pesos.
The MLC, for your reference: around 495 pesos
The MLC appears this Wednesday with an average indicative value of 495 Cuban pesos (CUP), buying at 463 CUP and selling at 526 CUP.
This figure should be taken with caution, given the low volume of operations supporting it during this time frame. Compared to the previous session, the MLC has decreased by 13 pesos from the 508 CUP recorded yesterday.
In the last week, however, the MLC has accumulated an increase of 20 pesos from the 475 CUP of seven days ago (+4.2%).
Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
Gap between the informal market and the official rate
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 684 CUP per dollar and 775 CUP per euro, remains significantly lower than the rates that prevail in daily practice in the informal currency market.
The difference between both markets is currently 70 pesos for the dollar and 88 pesos for the euro.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains quite distant from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for currency from the population.
In the last month, the official exchange rate of the dollar has increased from 634 to 684 CUP, an adjustment that, despite its magnitude, still does not close the gap with the parallel market.
