Disney World celebrates 55 years: it all started with one park and two hotels in Florida

Walt Disney World celebrates its 55th anniversary this Thursday, October 1, since its opening in Florida. To commemorate this milestone, Disney has retrieved images from its early years and highlighted stories of employees who have been working there since 1971, when the resort began welcoming visitors with a very different offering than today.

The starting point was Magic Kingdom and two hotels: Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. This is recalled in a retrospective by Walt Disney Archives published on D23, which collects historical photographs, several of which have been digitized especially for this anniversary.

What Disney World was like when it opened in 1971

The Disney brothers had presented their plans for the Florida project in 1965, as the company recalls in its official publication for the 55th anniversary of the resort. The proposal was not limited to building a park: it aimed to create a destination that could continue to expand.

In its early months, vacations could begin at the Contemporary, with the monorail running through the interior of the building, or at the Polynesian Village, among gardens and a setting inspired by the South Pacific. Accommodations and transportation were part of the experience; they were not just services to reach the attractions.

Inside Magic Kingdom, visitors found six themed areas. However, there was an important difference from the current passes: the entry did not grant unlimited access to all attractions. Coupon categories ranged from A to E, with the latter allowing guests to enjoy some of the more elaborate experiences.

The offer began to grow soon. In November of that same year, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground opened, which incorporated a camping alternative and outdoor activities. Therefore, it was not part of the openings on October 1st.

The four parks did not open at the same time

Although "Disney World" is often used to refer to the entire destination, Magic Kingdom is just one of its theme parks. The others were added in various stages over nearly three decades.

EPCOT opened on October 1, 1982, eleven years later, under the name EPCOT Center. According to the official Disney archives about its inauguration, it combined proposals on innovation and technology with pavilions dedicated to various countries. Thus, it shares a birthday with Magic Kingdom, but this Thursday it turns 44 years old.

On May 1, 1989, Disney-MGM Studios was incorporated, focusing on film and the world of entertainment. The park was renamed Disney's Hollywood Studios on January 7, 2008, as documented in the official D23 encyclopedia.

The fourth was Disney's Animal Kingdom, opened on April 22, 1998. Its concept added animal encounters, landscapes, and attractions related to nature, according to its historical record at D23.

Two employees who have been there since day one

The anniversary also features protagonists who have experienced that transformation from within. In a post from September 28, Disney introduced Frank and Earliene, two employees who started on opening day and continue with the company.

Frank works at Disney Live Entertainment and has held various positions over the past 55 years. In the testimony gathered by the company, he emphasized the opportunity to find his first job there and to develop much of his professional life within the same organization.

Earliene works in the product sales area of the Contemporary Resort. She recalled that when she started, she didn't imagine she would stay for such a long time. Among her satisfactions, she mentioned the interaction with visitors and seeing children enjoy their vacations.

Both participated as models for the anniversary commemorative collection, which includes clothing, accessories, and souvenirs. Their stories thus accompany a celebration that also honors the staff who welcomed the first visitors.

How Disney World is celebrating its 55th anniversary

In its balance published this Thursday, Disney states that it has added or refreshed more than 70 experiences since the 50th anniversary, celebrated in 2021. This number includes new offerings and updates; it does not mean that 70 new attractions have been built.

The company also highlights the renewal of the Cinderella Castle in 2026, featuring a combination of blues, cream tones, grays, and golds that embraces a classic aesthetic.

The commemoration will continue on Sunday, October 4, with a D23 gathering dedicated to 55 years of storytelling at the Contemporary Resort. Disney Archives and professionals involved in designing their experiences will participate. Tickets are sold out on the official page.

This birthday pertains to the Florida complex, not Disneyland, the park in Anaheim, California, which celebrated its opening on July 17, 1955.

Fifty-five years after that first day at Magic Kingdom, the anniversary brings together two perspectives: that of those discovering the destination for the first time and that of employees like Frank and Earliene, who have been part of its growth from the very beginning.
