The public libraries of Miami-Dade offer free English courses for adults through their Adult Learning Academy. The schedule includes online classes and an in-person option, with alternatives for those starting from scratch and for those looking to improve their communication skills.
The fall semester of 2026 runs from September 28 to December 17, and registration began on September 1. As classes are already underway, those interested should check if they can still join any group.
Who can participate and what do they need?
The academy is aimed at individuals aged 18 and older residing in Miami-Dade. To register, a valid library card from the county's library system is required, along with your number and PIN.
For virtual classes, an internet connection and a computer with audio and video are also required.
The course listings explain that the enrollment corresponds to the full ten-week class program. It's not about reserving a single session each time a date appears on the calendar.
How to obtain a library card
Those who do not yet have a card can check the official procedure to request it, available online or in person. The library requires identity and address verification through the documents accepted for this process.
The card is free for most county residents. Residents of Hialeah, Homestead, North Miami, and North Miami Beach can also obtain it for free thanks to agreements between their library systems.
There are exceptions: the official information sets an annual fee of 65 dollars for residents of Bal Harbour Village, Miami Shores Village, and Surfside. That amount corresponds to the card, not to enrollment in English courses.
What levels of English are there and at what times?
Programming allows for selection based on prior knowledge of the language. The following schedules are examples of groups included in the fall calendar, expressed in local Miami time; they do not constitute a confirmation of available spots.
Basic English for Beginners. It is designed for adults who do not speak English yet. One of the virtual groups on Mondays has classes from 5:00 to 6:30 PM, with lessons conducted via Zoom by a certified instructor.
Basic level II English groups are also available. For example, the information for a Wednesday group, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM, describes it as an option for adults who already speak some English. It is advisable to read the group's description before making a choice.
Intermediate English. This is for those who can communicate in the language but need to expand their vocabulary, reinforce grammar, and gain fluency. Among the options is a Monday group from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
Advanced Communication in English. It is aimed at individuals with a high intermediate level who wish to enhance their comprehension, conversation, reading, and writing skills. The schedule includes a level I group on Mondays from 5:00 to 6:30 PM.
In the virtual courses, registered participants receive the Zoom links for the sessions via email. It is important to check the calendar of the chosen group, as not all of them have the same start and end dates.
Where can basic in-person English classes be found?
The California Club library has scheduled an in-person basic English course on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. The location is at 700 Ives Dairy Road, Miami, FL 33179.
The course is designed for adults who do not speak English and requires registration for the complete program. Before attending, it is advisable to confirm with the library if they are accepting new enrollments. Their phone number is 305-770-3161.
How to check registration and waiting lists
When opening the group information, check both the description and the registration section. A future date on the calendar may correspond to another session of a course that has already started, not to the beginning of a new enrollment period.
Some listings offer the option “Join the waitlist”, which allows you to request a spot on the waiting list when the group is full. This is the case for the information published for one of the basic English groups on Mondays. Being on that list does not guarantee a confirmed spot.
Other displays show the notice “Registration now closed”, meaning that registration is closed, as seen in one of the class listings. The status should be verified by consulting the group: this guide does not guarantee real-time availability.
To inquire about enrollments, guidance on the appropriate level, or upcoming sessions, the academy provides the email adultlearning@mdpls.org. Please indicate which course you are interested in and what times you can attend.
There are also conversation circles for practice
In addition to the academy's courses, the libraries organize conversation meetings. The Doral branch has scheduled a virtual session on Monday, October 5, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, for individuals aged 18 and over.
The activity allows you to practice with other students and native speakers, accommodates different levels, and requires registration. The Zoom link is sent via email to those who have registered. To inquire about this session, the contact phone number is 305-716-9598.
A conversation circle and a full course are different activities. Review the format and requirements of each to choose an option that suits your level, availability, and preferred learning style.
