Those living in Miami-Dade and in need of training to access employment can find assistance to study specific trades and professions through CareerSource South Florida, ranging from commercial driving and electrical work to health, technology, HVAC, and logistics.

The program uses, among other mechanisms, educational scholarships and Individual Training Accounts (ITA), which are vouchers intended to finance job training. However, for a course to be listed among the approved programs, it does not mean that anyone can study it for free: CareerSource must first determine the applicant's eligibility and confirm the availability of funds.

The official training page of CareerSource South Florida explains that the funding can only be used at approved educational institutions and for occupations included in the corresponding high-demand job lists for the area.

The opportunity can be especially useful for individuals looking to enhance their job prospects but who do not yet meet the technical requirements for certain vacancies. CiberCuba recently reported on public jobs available in Miami-Dade, some of which require licenses, technical knowledge, or specialized experience.

What can be studied with these grants?

CareerSource maintains an official search tool for approved training programs that allows you to explore available options by institution or occupational area.

The current offer includes training in sectors such as construction, information technology, healthcare, transportation and logistics, electricity, climate control, manufacturing, management, finance, and hospitality, among others.

Among the programs currently listed in the search engine are courses to obtain commercial licenses CDL class A and B, training in air conditioning and refrigeration, electricity, plumbing, welding, automotive mechanics, medical assistance, practical nursing, phlebotomy, cybersecurity, computer networks, and logistics.

Recent options related to technology are also available, such as AI Engineer at The Code Academy, Amazon Web Services programs, cybersecurity, and network administration.

Inclusion in the portal is important: CareerSource warns that its scholarships and ITA must be used with approved providers and programs. Enrolling independently in a course that does not meet these conditions does not guarantee subsequent payment or reimbursement.

An example: training to drive trucks

The search engine itself allows you to check how much a specific program may cost and what amount is approved for an ITA.

For example, the Professional Tractor-Trailer Driver Program at The CDL Schools in their Miami campus currently has a duration of one month and 160 hours.

The public listing shows a tuition fee of $6,895, an enrollment fee of $150, and $187 for the license, totaling a maximum indicated ITA of $7,232. In this specific listing, the financial responsibility of the participant is currently shown as $0.

That does not mean that anyone can enroll and automatically receive $7,232. This is the financial information published for that program within the CareerSource system. The applicant must meet the corresponding requirements and obtain approval before assuming that the assistance will cover their training.

The costs, programs, and approved quantities may also change, so they should be verified again before enrolling.

Does CareerSource cover all educational expenses?

Not necessarily. The system is designed to prepare workers for occupations considered in high demand, not to finance any career, university, or course that the applicant chooses.

CareerSource identifies priority sectors as aviation, banking and finance, creative design, hospitality and tourism, life sciences and health, technology, and trade and logistics.

Within those sectors, there are approved public and private institutions. The list includes, among others, programs from Miami Dade College, technical centers from Miami-Dade public schools, and various private vocational institutes.

Therefore, before paying a tuition fee, it is advisable to first consult with CareerSource to see if the selected training can be funded and what portion of its costs would be covered.

The assistance can also be combined with other scholarships

The ITA program system warns that when a person is eligible for a Pell Grant and the selected program also allows for the use of that federal aid, the Pell Grant must be applied first to tuition costs.

This means that an ITA should not necessarily be understood as an isolated scholarship that replaces all other forms of assistance. CareerSource can coordinate different funding sources to cover the expenses that align with the program rules.

For that reason, two students interested in the same course may end up with different financing structures.

How to start the process in Miami-Dade

CareerSource has centers where applicants can receive career guidance, skills assessment, labor market information, job search assistance, and training opportunity guidance.

The organization also maintains a guide to register for Employ Miami-Dade. The registration process allows you to create a profile as a job seeker and complete the necessary employment information to access various services.

Once registered, the interested individual can explain what type of employment they are seeking and specifically inquire about training, educational scholarships, or Individual Training Accounts. The staff will need to determine what services and funding may be applicable to them.

It is not advisable to start a course assuming that CareerSource will pay for it later. The approval for training and funding must be clarified in advance.

Where to ask for in-person help

CareerSource South Florida maintains service centers in various locations throughout Miami-Dade, including Hialeah Downtown, Little Havana, North Miami Beach, West Dade, Perrine, and Carol City.

It also offers assistance at the Downtown Miami library and has a center in Homestead that operates by appointment, according to the information currently published.

The general hours announced for full-service centers are from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., although certain locations have different hours or operating modes. It is advisable to check the selected center before visiting.

CareerSource also publishes the general phone number 305-594-7615 and a contact form to request information.

What to ask before choosing a course

Before enrolling, it is advisable to ask the advisor to confirm whether the program is still approved, the cost, what expenses the aid can cover, how much the student would need to contribute, and what certification or license will be obtained upon completion.

It is also important to inquire about the duration, schedules, location, and entry requirements. A short program may allow for quick entry into the job market, while others may require several months of preparation or demand prior knowledge.

Finally, it is necessary to verify whether the license or certification is sufficient to practice the desired occupation or if it will be necessary to pass an additional exam later.

For those looking for employment in Miami-Dade, the advantage of CareerSource is not just finding a course, but linking training with professions that are in demand. The key is to start the process before making any payments, check eligibility, and choose only from approved programs for the corresponding assistance.
