Trump promises to pay $90 to the more than 20 million senior citizens beneficiaries of Medicare

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Saturday that he will send a one-time payment of $90 to over 20 million seniors enrolled in the Medicare Part B program, as assistance to help cover their monthly health insurance premiums.

The president announced it through his social media platform Truth Social, where he stated that the government will immediately start distributing payments. In his words, the goal is to "help them pay their Part B Medicare premiums, which we have already significantly reduced."

The funds will come from the Medicare Improvement Fund, created by Congress in 2008, which Trump described as "a useless discretionary fund that the 'dummocrats' in Congress have only used to finance waste, fraud, and abuse for the benefit of their special interest group friends."

According to data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the exact number of eligible beneficiaries amounts to approximately 20.8 million people.

Not all enrollees in Medicare will receive the payment. Those who are excluded include participants in Medicare Advantage plans, individuals who already receive premium assistance through Medicaid, and those who pay a monthly income-related adjustment (IRMAA).

Most eligible beneficiaries will receive the funds via direct deposit around October 8; those without this option will receive a paper check.

The announcement comes in a context that several analysts and media outlets such as Reuters, Politico, and NBC News have described as politically calculated: there are only a few weeks left until the midterm elections in November 2026, in which the Republicans are seeking to consolidate their majority in Congress.

The Democratic Senator Ron Wyden quickly reacted and described the measure as "the latest attempt by Trump to bribe the American public," arguing that 90 dollars is insufficient in light of the sustained rise in program costs.

The criticism is supported by the numbers themselves: the standard premium for Medicare Part B in 2026 is $202.90 per month, an increase of $17.90 from the previous year, which means that the one-time payment barely covers less than half a month of the premium and does not represent a permanent reduction in cost.

Some analysts also questioned whether the administration has the authority to make these disbursements without Congressional approval, according to reports from Politico and Reuters.

In the same message, Trump took the opportunity to recall other promises of direct payments to citizens. He mentioned "similarly substantial" refunds for nearly a million Americans who, according to him, were overcharged by the Biden administration for Affordable Care Act plans.

The president also reiterated his promise of the so-called "Trump Dividend": a payment of 5,000 dollars for all adult Americans, although conditioned on Republicans winning the midterm elections. "You can also be assured that the very popular 'Trump Dividend' of 5,000 dollars will be distributed to all U.S. citizens if Republicans win the midterm elections!" he wrote on Truth Social.
