Eleven people, including two minors, were rescued during the night this Sunday in the municipality of Moa, Holguín, after being trapped by the rising waters of the Cayo Guan River.

The event was reported this Monday by the official profile Realidades desde Holguín, which indicated that the river overflowed "with great force" and caught people by surprise during the emergency.

According to that source, the Moa Firefighters arrived at the scene and worked alongside rescue teams from the companies Pedro Soto Alba and Ernesto Che Guevara.

The operation took place overnight, under dangerous and tense conditions, while rescuers evacuated the trapped individuals one by one.

"One by one, they managed to rescue all eleven from the water," the post indicated, clarifying that the two minors were brought to safety and no incidents were reported.

Holguín has recorded several rescues of people trapped by river floods and inundations in recent years.

In September 2023, ten people had to be rescued after becoming trapped by the flood of a river in the province, amid heavy rainfall.

The incident occurred precisely because of the rise of the Cayo Guan River.

"In these moments, the Rescue and Salvage Unit of the Pedro Soto Alba factory and Command 30 of the Minint are carrying out the rescue of 10 people trapped on the banks of the Cayo Guam river, in the municipality of Moa," reported the local television station Tele Cristal at that time.

Similarly, in October 2025, more than 140 people were rescued in Sagua de Tánamo, including many children and mothers with their children, after the waters completely covered homes.

That same month, 29 people, including eight children, were evacuated in La Camilo, Holguín after being cut off due to rising waters from a river during the rains associated with Hurricane Melissa.

Sudden rises in rivers and streams represent one of the main risks during episodes of heavy rainfall in eastern Cuba, especially in low-lying areas or near waterways, where water levels can rise quickly.
