Gasoline prices drop significantly in South Florida

Gas prices in South Florida experienced a significant drop this week, with decreases of up to 24 cents per gallon in some areas, according to data from AAA published this Monday.

The state average in Florida was $4.06 per gallon, representing a decrease of 28 cents compared to the previous week, one of the most significant drops recorded so far in 2026.

"Drivers in Florida are finally seeing some relief at the gas stations after the sharp increase in prices last month," noted Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA, in a statement.

In Miami-Dade, the average gallon dropped by 15 cents to $4.15, while Fort Lauderdale recorded $4.16, with a decrease of 22 cents in seven days.

West Palm Beach and Boca Raton dropped by 24 cents to $4.26, while Monroe County —the Keys— also fell by 24 cents to $4.37.

Despite the relief, South Florida remains the most expensive area in the state for refueling, while the north continues to have the lowest prices: Pensacola at $3.91 and Panama City at $3.92 per gallon.

Cities like Tampa/St. Pete ($3.96), Orlando ($3.98), and Bradenton/Sarasota ($3.97) have fallen back below the $4 threshold, something that hasn't happened since before the increase in September.

The national average price also decreased, though more modestly: $4.36 per gallon nationwide, a decline of 11 cents compared to the previous week. Florida, at $4.06, remains below that national average.

The decrease comes after a particularly tough September for drivers. The state average reached $4.24 on September 22, peaking at $4.33, the highest since May, when the state hit its annual maximum of $4.34 per gallon.

The factors explaining the decline are several: the lower seasonal demand following the end of summer, the transition to winter fuel blends—approved early by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with a potential savings of up to 15 cents per gallon—and the drop in crude oil prices below $100 per barrel at the end of September.

The year 2026 has been highly volatile for fuel in Florida. At the beginning of the year, geopolitical tensions and refining issues caused prices to soar, and in April, a gas station in Miami Beach charged $5.39 per gallon.

For those looking for the most economical options, the GasBuddy app allows you to locate in real-time the stations with the lowest prices in each area, a tool that AAA also recommends for planning road stops and reducing fuel costs.
