Gabriela Fernández Álvarez, presenter and scriptwriter of the Cuban government program Con Filo, has been admitted to the Master's in Human Rights at the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí (UASLP) in Mexico, where she is currently located, as confirmed by CiberCuba with several sources.
The for the 2026-2028 cohort on July 2.
In the official list of 30 admitted applicants, number 14 is "Fernández Alvarez Gabriela".
Several sources consulted by CiberCuba also confirmed Fernández's presence in San Luis Potosí and noted that he recently attended a performance by the Cuban troubadour Frank Delgado at a bar in that city.
From Con Filo to a Master's in Human Rights
The academic path chosen by Fernández is particularly striking due to his role as one of the faces of Con Filo, a program on Cuban state television created in 2021 that has since become one of the main media spokespersons for the political discourse of the regime.
The program regularly dedicates its broadcasts to defending the positions of the Cuban government and discrediting opponents, activists, independent journalists, and figures from the exile community.
Their hosts have used the platform to attack critics of the system, question reports of political repression, and ridicule opposition initiatives.
In April of this year, for example, Fernández appeared alongside Michel Torres Corona in a video where both mocked the creation of opposition political organizations outside of Cuba.
CiberCuba then reported on that intervention by the hosts of Con Filo, made in light of new political projects promoted from exile.
A master's degree dedicated to promoting and defending rights
Fernández's selection contrasts with the content of the academic program itself.
The Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí explains that its Master's in Human Rights lasts four semesters and aims to train professionals who can analyze social and legal conflicts from a human rights perspective.
Among its objectives are research, critical analysis, and the development of proposals aimed at the promotion, respect, and defense of human rights.
The plan also includes research seminars and activities directly related to the promotion and defense of those rights.
That academic profile inevitably contrasts with the Cuban reality, where national and international organizations have documented for years instances of political detentions, restrictions on freedom of expression and association, persecution of dissenters and independent journalists, and sentencing of participants in anti-government protests.
Fernández has publicly defended Con Filo
The host has not been a secondary figure within the program.
During a tour in Spain in May 2025, he openly defended the work of Con Filo against criticisms that label it as a space for political propaganda.
"It's a program that you may or may not agree with, because in the end it's based on opinion and political analysis, but we have never lied," he stated during an event held in Malaga.
CiberCuba gathered those statements during a tour that was accompanied by protests from Cuban exiles in various Spanish cities.
Some protesters attended those events to denounce the existence of political prisoners in Cuba and reject the narrative spread by state media.
The role of Con Filo within state television
Con Filo began its broadcasts just a month after the protests on July 11, 2021, the largest anti-government demonstrations to occur in Cuba in decades.
Since then, the space has taken on an openly political role within state television, defending official positions and dedicating numerous programs to responding to opponents and independent media.
Fernández became one of his regular figures alongside Michel Torres Corona.
Her incorporation into a university program focused specifically on human rights now introduces a clear contrast between her new academic training and the communication apparatus to which she has been linked in Cuba.
Gabriela Fernández is already in Mexico
CiberCuba was able to confirm through multiple sources that Fernández is currently in San Luis Potosí.
Her presence in the city coincides with her admission to the 2026-2028 master's program.
Sources consulted by this outlet also indicated that she was recently seen at a Frank Delgado concert in a local venue.
The presenter has not publicly explained until now what motivated her choice of this graduate program or how she plans to reconcile that training with her career in Con Filo.
Her arrival at a master's program dedicated to the study and defense of human rights is, in any case, particularly significant for a figure who has been associated for years with one of the television spaces most frequently used by the Cuban regime to promote its political narrative and attack its critics.
