The Cuban troubadour Ray Fernández, known as "Ray Tun Tun," announced his recovery after the brutal assault he suffered days ago in Vedado, Havana, with a Facebook message as straightforward as his style: "Sewn-up skull and brand-new teeth. I'm already back on the street."

The post, accompanied by a selfie in which he appears smiling, confirms that the musician is out of danger after having suffered loss of teeth and fractures to his face and skull.

"Friends are among the best that life has to offer. Thank you to all my dear ones. I'm out and about. I have always been and will always be an open book," wrote the troubadour on his Facebook profile.

The musician also had some words for his attackers and for those who took pleasure in what happened to him: "To the perpetrators of the robbery and to those who rejoice in my misfortune, may the Lord not hold it against you."

The attack occurred days ago around 7:00 a.m., just two blocks from his home, near the Centro Vasco, on 4th Street between 53rd and 55th, in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality.

The harsh details of the assault emerged from a private conversation that the troubadour had with the guitarist Dagoberto Pedraja, who published a screenshot of the exchange on his profile. In that message, Fernández bluntly described what happened: «I was assaulted, I lost my teeth and I have several fractures in my face and skull but I'm already back on my feet... It’s crazy, the street has turned into a western».

The irony of the situation has not gone unnoticed: the artist, who declared himself a "proud communist militant" in January 2020 and composed a verse praising the Minister of Culture Alpidio Alonso after he attacked an independent journalist, is now a victim of the crime that plagues the entire country.

In May, he let slip a veiled complaint about the blackouts with the phrase: “Fidel is Fidel! Raúl is Raúl! And this blackout is nameless!”.

Rise of crime in Cuba

The assault on Fernández is a clear indication of the ongoing decline in security in Cuba. The Cuban Observatory for Citizen Audit (OCAC) recorded 2,833 verified crimes in 2025, a 115% increase compared to 2024, with 1,536 cases of theft and 398 crimes concentrated in Havana.

The Ministry of the Interior itself has acknowledged a 25% increase in crime rates, although independent organizations estimate that the actual figures are significantly higher.

The Public Insecurity Report from OCAC for the first half of this year documented 985 crimes between January and June, compared to 1,319 recorded during the same period in 2025. The document notes that this decrease of 25.3% is not reliable due to reporting limitations from Cuba.

"Their statistics represent an underreporting based solely on events that manage to become public, and that during 2026, prolonged blackouts, connectivity challenges, and the deterioration of the informational ecosystem have decreased the ability to document them," the text specifies.

El Vedado, where the attack occurred, is a significantly affected area: last June, residents of the area reported more than 30 robberies in homes within a single week.
