Neighbors feed a man who has been in a doorway in Havana for five days: "If anyone knows him."

An elderly man has been lying in the doorway of a home in the Mantilla neighborhood, Arroyo Naranjo municipality, in Havana, for at least five days, without authorities responding to the call for help made publicly by neighbors and a local resident.

The report was published on Monday on the Facebook page "Cuba News Today" by Adianet Smith Destrade, who shared several photographs of the man on the ground wearing a long-sleeved shirt, flip-flops, and checkered shorts. "Good morning, I don't usually make this type of post, but this gentleman has been at the entrance of this house for five days; please, if anyone knows him or his family and can come to get him, the address is Pedro Nuevo #74 between Calzada de Managua and Carmela," she wrote.

In the comments on the same post, the author clarified that solidarity has come from those living nearby, not from the State: "The neighbors themselves, the people from the nearby churches are providing food, and they have called the authorities to come and collect it, but nothing, it's all in vain."

The pattern repeats with a regularity that is becoming hard to ignore.

In January 2025, an elderly man without a home was sleeping in the doorway of Línea and 14, in El Vedado, and it was the neighbors who brought him clothing, soup, and tea while the institutions remained absent.

In April of this year, an elderly woman who was disoriented was found in public in Playa, and it was also the neighbors who tried to locate her family through Facebook without any state institution taking responsibility for her care.

A month later, a woman known as "Luci" remained in a state of abandonment in San Miguel del Padrón: doctors and social workers visited the site, but did not provide a concrete solution.

The audiovisual producer Cesario Navas warned in February this year about the visible increase of sick, hungry, and homeless people who are surviving in doorways, parks, and uninhabitable buildings in Cuba.

The crisis has official figures that the regime itself cannot hide.

At the end of August 2026, the Cuban government acknowledged 883,446 people in vulnerable situations in the country, nearly 7,000 more than in April of the same year, according to data released this week by the state-run press.

In the absence of institutional support, it is the churches and the community members who uphold what the State neglects.

Anyone who recognizes the man at Pedro Nuevo #74 can go directly to that address, located in the Mantilla neighborhood, between Calzada de Managua and Carmela, in Arroyo Naranjo.
