Two Cuban citizens were placed under justified preventive detention in Cancun after being linked to a process for drug-related offenses, according to the Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo in its communiqué 400/2026-FDN, published on Thursday.

The accused are Gabriel "N", charged with supplying cannabis sativa, and Yexika "N", identified for possession with intent to supply the same narcotic, both in the municipality of Benito Juárez.

A Control judge issued a justified preventive detention measure against him, which will remain in effect throughout the criminal proceedings.

The Specialized Prosecutor's Office for the Fight Against Drug Trafficking handled the cases of the two Cubans as a separate action within the same statement, distinct from four other defendants who were also linked to the process in different incidents.

Among those four additional cases is Jorge Luis Rafael "N", accused of possession with intent to supply cannabis; Carlos Augusto "N" and Edgar Iván "N", for simple possession of the same narcotic; and Carmelo "N", for simple possession of marijuana and methamphetamine.

The formal connection to the process officially opens the criminal proceedings, but it does not equate to a guilty verdict: the responsibility of the defendants must be determined in court.

This new case adds to a series of operations in Quintana Roo that throughout 2026 have involved numerous Cubans in alleged drug-related crimes.

Just ten days earlier, five Cubans were arrested in Supermanzana 63 in Cancun during the Blindaje Cancun operation, after being observed in an alleged exchange of bags containing marijuana near the El Parián market.

In that operation, substances similar to marijuana and methamphetamine were seized, along with a firearm, two vehicles, mobile phones, and 8,600 Mexican pesos that were allegedly counterfeit.

The pattern repeats throughout the year: in August, three Cubans were arrested at Mercado 28 with over 130 doses of marijuana and crystal, and another Cuban citizen was detained with more than 100 doses and apparently counterfeit bills.

In June, four Cubans were processed in Cancun for marijuana sales, and another seven were arrested in Holbox with a shipment that included cocaine, crack, and ecstasy.

Human rights organizations have warned about the vulnerability of Cuban migrants stranded in cities like Cancun as they try to reach the United States, pointing out that this situation exposes them to being targeted by criminal networks.

All defendants are identified solely by their first name followed by "N," in accordance with the practice of the Mexican judicial system to preserve the presumption of innocence until the process concludes with a final ruling.
