A Cuban woman who works caring for the elderly shared on TikTok a reflection on how this experience has changed her outlook on life. After getting to know the realities of aging up close, she claims she has stopped placing so much importance on material things and now prefers to invest her money in her well-being, enjoy new experiences, and make the most of her time while she is healthy.
It is about Tania Fonseca, known on social media as "The Cuban and the Gringo", who explained in a video posted on TikTok how working with older adults has transformed her priorities and made her reflect on what truly matters in life.
"I'm going to make this video and I don't intend to discuss it with anyone; it's my opinion, what I think about life," the Cuban began, making it clear that she was speaking from her personal experience.
According to what she said, she used to place a lot of importance on having clothes, shoes, handbags, perfumes, and jewelry. However, after she started working as a caregiver, her way of thinking changed radically.
"I'm no longer interested in having a closet full of clothes, filled with shoes, handbags in different colors, twenty-five perfumes. That doesn't interest me anymore," she said.
Now, instead of accumulating belongings, she prefers to spend her money on vacations, spending time with family, exercising, receiving massages, and taking care of her skin. For her, enjoying the present and staying healthy is far more valuable than filling a closet with things that might never be used.
His work has allowed him to closely observe how life changes as people age and begin to rely on others to make certain decisions.
"When one becomes a senior, it's the family that decides what will happen to you. Closets remain filled with clothes, perfumes linger, and people fight over what you left behind, while you spent your entire life believing that material things were what mattered," he reflected.
For this reason, he wanted to send a message to those who dedicate a significant part of their lives to working and acquiring material possessions, but often postpone their own well-being.
"Take some time for yourselves, improve your quality of life, go to the gym, get some exercise, spend time with your friends. If you want to spend money on massages, go ahead, because life can be tough, and our children, our family, are the ones who decide our future," he expressed.
Although Tania focused her message on what she has learned working as a caregiver, her testimony raises a question that many can relate to: Is it worth spending life accumulating material things and postponing the experiences we truly want to enjoy?
The Cuban woman concluded her reflection with a direct piece of advice for her followers: "Look, folks, take care of yourselves and live the best you can while you have health and motivation."
