The President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated this Tuesday that he will accept the results of the legislative elections on November 3 as long as the elections are honest.

Trump made these statements to reporters while heading to Lubbock, Texas, to participate in campaign events in support of the Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton.

When directly asked if he would accept the election results regardless of who won, he responded: “I will, if the elections are honest, yes”, according to CBS News.

Trump emphasizes his veto power if the Republicans lose Congress

During the same exchange with reporters, Trump also addressed the possibility that the Republican Party could lose control of one or both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.

The president stated that, even in that scenario, he would retain tools to negotiate with lawmakers and exercise his presidential powers.

“I have a broad veto. I hope that doesn’t happen, but if it does, it has happened before with other presidents. You have a broad veto and end up reaching agreements,” he stated, according to the agency AFP.

The presidential veto allows the president to reject bills approved by Congress. Lawmakers can override this veto with a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

Background of their statements regarding the election results

Trump has previously conditioned the recognition of electoral results on his assessment of the integrity of the process.

During the presidential debate in September 2020, he stated that he would accept fair elections, but he questioned the possibility of recognizing the results if he believed that votes had been manipulated.

After his defeat against Joe Biden, Trump alleged electoral fraud. His claims of widespread fraud were not proven in the courts.

In the 2024 presidential debate, he once again expressed a similar position by stating that he would accept the results if the elections were "fair, legal, and correct."

In July 2026, Trump reiterated his allegations about the 2020 elections, despite documents released by the White House concluding that there was no electoral fraud.
