Isabel Rodríguez Silverio and Marcos Alejandro Fernández González each won silver medals at the World Triathlon Development Regional Cup held in Limón, Costa Rica, this past Sunday.

Both Cubans competed in the sprint format —750 meters of swimming, 20 kilometers of cycling, and five kilometers of running— at Playa Cieneguita, during an event of the Americas Triathlon continental circuit aimed at young athletes seeking international experience.

In the women's trial, Rodríguez Silverio made the decisive break during the cycling segment alongside the Argentine Sofía De Rosas and the Guatemalan Bivian Andrea Luisita Díaz Fuentes, recording the best bike segment time of the race: 32:51 in the 20 kilometers.

However, it was in the running event where the podium was decided. According to the weekly report from World Triathlon published this Monday, "De Rosas was clearly determined to win the race and finished with an 18-second lead over Rodríguez."

The Argentinian crossed the finish line in 1:04:14, while the Cuban completed the course in 1:04:32, with splits of 10:45 in swimming and 20:06 in the running segment.

Díaz Fuentes completed the women's podium with a time of 1:04:58.

In the men's trial, Fernández González led the swimming segment with the best time in the field: 9:12.

He also led a group of six athletes during the cycling segment and reached the second transition with a slight lead over the Mexican Luis Miguel Chávez Sánchez.

Both crossed the finish line with the same official time —55:29— in a finish resolved by photo-finish in favor of the Mexican.

The Costa Rican Gerald Rojas Carvajal finished third with a time of 55:33, while another Cuban, Jorge Emmanuel Alemañez, came in fourth with a time of 56:25 among 37 competitors from seven countries.

The competition was preceded by a regional development camp held in San José from October 20 to 25, featuring 12 athletes and six coaches from Cuba, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, and Honduras.

Both triathletes arrive in Limón with solid backgrounds in the development circuit. Rodríguez Silverio, originally from Santa Clara and born in 2003, has achieved 10 podium finishes and three victories in 24 international competitions, including the Regional Cup of Amatique Bay in May of this year.

Fernández González, born in 2004, has achieved 12 podiums and four victories in 28 outings, including the Regional Cup of Asunción last August.

As the most notable predecessor of Cuban triathlon on the international circuit, triathlete Alejandro Rodríguez —unlike the athletes mentioned in this article— won silver at the Huatulco World Cup 2025, a result deemed historic for the sport on the island.
