The United States Armed Forces have deployed air defense systems near Mar-a-Lago, the residence of Donald Trump in Palm Beach, Florida, and in the vicinity of the city's airport, as part of an enhancement of presidential security in anticipation of a possible visit from the president during the Halloween weekend.
The operation was carried out by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM) at the request of the Secret Service.
The authorities have not identified any specific threat that prompted the deployment, nor have they specified how long the equipment will remain in place.
According to the agency EFE, cited by El Nuevo Herald, the air defense systems were placed on barges near Mar-a-Lago and at the President Donald J. Trump International Airport, formerly known as Palm Beach International Airport.
The local channel WPTV documented on October 26 the presence of two air defense systems on a barge in the Intracoastal Waterway, near the presidential residence.
The teams were also observed from Southern Boulevard, one of the main access roads to the area.
How do Avenger air defense systems work?
Among the deployed systems is the AN/TWQ-1 Avenger, a short-range mobile air defense system mounted on a military vehicle Humvee and designed to intercept threats operating at low altitudes.
The Avenger features a swiveling turret equipped with two containers for FIM-92 Stinger surface-to-air missiles, capable of carrying up to eight missiles, as well as a .50 caliber machine gun.
It can be used against drones, helicopters, and certain low-flying aircraft, but it is not designed to intercept ballistic missiles.
The Secret Service explained that it operates in a heightened threat environment and has requested additional capabilities to counter small unmanned aerial systems.
However, neither that agency nor the military commands have communicated that there is an imminent threat against Mar-a-Lago.
The retired lieutenant colonel Octavio Pérez, a Cuban-American defense intelligence analyst and co-founder of the Miami Strategic Intelligence Institute, explained to NBC Miami that the Avenger enhances presidential protection against potential low-altitude aerial threats.
Among the scenarios he mentioned are the use of one or more drones, helicopters, or small civil aircraft, such as those of the Piper or Cessna type.
Pérez also suggested that the security context leading up to the U.S. legislative elections and the upcoming G20 summit in Miami could influence protection decisions, although authorities have not confirmed any connection between these events and the deployment.
More than 60 aircraft intercepted near Palm Beach
The military reinforcement arrives after numerous incidents related to the airspace restrictions around Palm Beach during presidential visits.
According to data from NORAD cited by WPTV and collected by EFE, more than 60 aircraft have been intercepted since January 2025 for violating the temporary flight restrictions established in the area.
One of the recent incidents occurred on October 24, when a NORAD F-16 fighter jet intercepted a civilian aircraft that had entered restricted airspace near Mar-a-Lago. The pilot was warned and instructed to leave the area.
Temporary flight restrictions are established to protect certain areas during presidential movements.
Pilots who violate them may be intercepted by military aircraft and face actions from federal authorities.
Air restrictions and road closures due to a possible visit from Trump
The deployment coincides with security preparations for the possible arrival of Trump in Palm Beach to participate in a Halloween event over the weekend.
According to reported by La Opinión Hispana, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) established temporary airspace restrictions from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 1.
The same outlet reported that the municipal authorities of Palm Beach ordered the closure of South Ocean Boulevard, between South County Road and Southern Boulevard, starting at 5:00 AM on Friday, October 30, without initially announcing a reopening date.
The measure may affect the usual movements of residents, workers, and visitors in this coastal area, particularly those who use that route to access establishments and properties near Mar-a-Lago.
The security measures around the presidential residence have been strengthened on several occasions following incidents reported at Trump’s properties.
In September 2024, authorities thwarted an assassination attempt against the then-Republican candidate at his golf club in West Palm Beach.
More recently, in February 2026, agents of the Secret Service shot an armed man who attempted to enter Mar-a-Lago. Trump was not at the property during that incident.
For now, NORAD and the Secret Service have not announced when they will withdraw the anti-aircraft systems deployed around the presidential residence.
