The Baltimore Orioles officially declined the 20 million dollar club option on center fielder Luis Robert Jr. for the 2027 season, leaving the Cuban player without a team and in search of a new destination in Major League Baseball.
As a result of the decision, Robert will receive a buyout of two million dollars and will be available as a free agent, according to the organization from Baltimore confirmed on Saturday.
The Cuban's stay in Baltimore was as brief as it was tumultuous. The Orioles had claimed him off waivers from the New York Mets at the end of August, taking on nearly $4.9 million in obligations, but Robert played in only three games with the team before returning to the injured list due to discomfort in his left hamstring.
The 2026 season was, once again, a chapter dominated by physical issues. Traded by the Chicago White Sox to the Mets in January in exchange for infielder Luisángel Acuña and pitcher Truman Pauley, Robert was placed on the injured list in April due to a lumbar disc herniation and remained out for nearly three months.
Between the Mets and the Orioles, the Cuban played only 61 games throughout the season, with a line of .221/.300/.407, 11 home runs and 26 RBIs.
The pattern of injuries has become the biggest obstacle in his career: in 2024 he lost time due to a hip strain, in 2025 he suffered two hamstring injuries, and in 2026 a herniated disc kept him off the field for months. In total, he missed 114 games combined just in the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
However, the talent that made him one of the most sought-after prospects of his generation has not vanished. His best version remains that of 2023, when he hit 38 home runs, stole 20 bases, was selected for the All-Star Game, won the Silver Slugger, and finished among the contenders for the American League Most Valuable Player voting.
Robert will turn 30 in August 2027, and his defense in center field remains elite, two factors that keep him as one of the most attractive names in the free agent market, despite his medical history.
The market projection indicates a one-year contract with incentives rather than a multi-year agreement. Among the teams identified as possible interested parties are the Philadelphia Phillies, the San Diego Padres, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Kansas City Royals, although there are no confirmed formal negotiations as of the close of this edition.
The Orioles themselves do not rule out trying to retain him with a lower-value contract, which adds another variable to a market that will define the next chapter in the Cuban player's career.
