Roberto Carlos Almaguer Pupo sustained serious injuries, including a lung injury, after allegedly being assaulted by two men following a traffic altercation in the city of Holguín. The incident reportedly began when he requested to pass a tricycle that was parked in the middle of the street.
The report was published this Tuesday on Facebook by Ernesto Almaguer Díaz, who identified the victim as his cousin and requested public assistance in locating those responsible.
According to their account, the incident occurred on Sunday, around noon, at the intersection of Carralero Street and Avenida de los Libertadores, in the city of Holguín.
Almaguer explained that his cousin was driving a truck when he came across a teal-colored tricycle with a blue tarp, parked in the middle of the road.
The man honked the horn to request that they clear the way, but the occupants of the tricycle did not react at first. After a second signal, they moved the vehicle and allowed the truck to continue on its route.
However, as he passed by the tricycle, the driver and his companion allegedly struck the hood of the truck with force.
The affected individual moved a few meters and stopped to check if his vehicle had sustained any damage. It was then, according to the report, that the two men approached and attacked him.
"Two men for just one", wrote the relative when reporting that both were involved in the assault.
Almaguer assured that his cousin received a severe blow to the cheekbone that required stitching and reconstruction. He also reported that he was injured with a sharp object in the left side of the chest.
According to the medical details provided by the family, the injury reached the lung and caused a pneumothorax, a complication where air accumulates between the lung and the chest wall, which can make breathing difficult.
The complainant also stated that the wound was near the heart and that his cousin lost a considerable amount of blood, leading him to believe that his life was in danger.
The relative described the tricycle driver as a middle-aged man of robust build, wearing military-style green pants.
Regarding the companion, it was indicated that he was wearing blue jeans, according to what the victim remembers.
He also noted that both had been consuming drinks at an establishment located near Carralero Street and the Avenue of the Libertadores.
Almaguer asked anyone who witnessed the events or has information about the two men to contact him discreetly at the number 53567540.
The publication does not specify whether the alleged aggressors have been identified by the Police, if there is a formal complaint filed with the authorities, or what the current medical condition of the victim is. There has also been no public statement from the accused individuals.
However, among the comments, one person claimed to have been at the scene: "But it had already happened, I only saw patrol cars at the place," which confirms that the events are known to the authorities.
The reported incident occurs weeks after residents of Holguín alerted about projectile attacks against individuals waiting in doorways during power outages.
In that report, published in October, a resident recounted that groups of young people were launching pieces of rebar with slingshots and called for a police response.
Other episodes of violence have been reported recently in Cuba. In October, independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta reported that his brother had been assaulted and hit on the head in Santiago de Cuba. The attackers took his cellphone and inflicted injuries, although the victim was reported to be stable after the attack.
Days earlier, a young man from Camagüey reported that an alleged assailant fractured his arm by throwing a piece of marble at him in an attempt to steal his motorcycle. The victim claimed that he managed to protect his head with his arm, where he received the impact.
