Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia, set to chair the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, issued a warning of just two words following projections that give his party a majority in the House: "Lawyer up," an expression that can be interpreted as "Get a lawyer."

The phrase appeared in a statement released by the Democrats of the Oversight Committee following the legislative elections on November 3. The statement introduces Garcia as the upcoming chair of the committee and anticipates an agenda of investigations into the environment surrounding President Donald Trump and actions of his Administration.

Trump, ICE, and the Epstein files under scrutiny

The official note highlights four priority areas: the alleged conflicts of interest and corruption cases related to the Trump family, corporate corruption, potential abuses by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the handling of documents connected to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Democrats use the term "Trump Crime Family" in the statement and mention an alleged cover-up regarding the Epstein files. These are political accusations made by the parliamentary group, not judicially established facts from the announcement.

Garcia had outlined that roadmap before the voting. According to an interview published on November 3 by Punchbowl News, his team had been preparing investigations and public hearings on these issues for weeks, including the potential responsibilities of high-ranking federal officials and businesses linked to the presidential environment.

What will change with a Democratic majority?

Garcia, a representative from California, is currently the highest-ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, which was chaired during the previous legislature by Republican James Comer. If he assumes the chairmanship in the new Congress, expected to start on January 3, 2027, he will have broader parliamentary oversight powers, such as calling hearings and promoting subpoenas to obtain documents and testimonies.

In an interview with Long Beach Post prior to the elections, the legislator stated that he would seek to investigate both immigration agents for alleged abuses and those responsible for the policies they enforce. He also mentioned the handling of Epstein's files and the relationships between private companies and the Government.

NBC News projected on November 3 that the Democrats had regained the majority in the House of Representatives. The projection suggests an upcoming change in committee control, although the counting of various contests and the formal organization of the new legislature still need to be completed.

The warning "Lawyer up" sets the tone for the relationship that Garcia intends to maintain with the White House. The actual extent of the investigations will depend on the decisions of the new committee and the possible responses from the Administration and the courts.
