The elected governor of Florida, Byron Donalds, acknowledged the unease among Republican voters following the elections this Tuesday in the United States and stated that some supporters of his party chose to stay home or vote for Democratic candidates.
"We have many Republicans who either didn't vote or decided to vote for Democrats," Donalds stated in comments released this Wednesday by Fox News, in which he linked the electoral discontent with the rising fuel prices and the lack of legislative progress in Congress.
The Republican politician, who has just won the governorship of Florida, stated that his party must pay attention to the concerns of the citizens, especially regarding economic issues that directly affect families.
Among the issues mentioned were the rising costs of gasoline and diesel, two products whose prices are a concern for American consumers.
Donalds also pointed out that Congress had squandered opportunities to advance some of the key priorities of the Republican agenda.
In particular, he mentioned the lack of approval for the SAVE America Act, a legislative proposal aimed at establishing stricter requirements to verify U.S. citizenship in voter registration, as well as the absence of measures to make certain border security policies of President Donald Trump permanent legislation.
“I believe there is a frustration out there that we have a responsibility to address,” stated the elected governor.
His statements come after the electoral setbacks experienced by the Republican Party, which Donalds linked to the dissatisfaction of some of its voters and the pending priorities in Washington.
Although Trump managed to assert himself in Florida, his words reflect his concern about the loss of Republican support in other parts of the country and the need to respond to the demands of those who traditionally back the party.
The economy was also present in his message after the electoral victory. In other statements made to Fox News, Donalds promised to work so that new generations find greater opportunities in the state.
“Let's make sure our children can achieve their dream of Florida here, in Florida”, he stated.
The Republican described his victory as the result of a challenging and highly contested campaign, but he insisted that his priority will be to make life more affordable for residents.
Donalds won the Florida gubernatorial election against the Democrat David Jolly in a race that was closer than expected.
His victory allows the Republican Party to maintain control of the governorship of Florida, which it has held continuously since 1999.
Donalds will assume office in January 2027, when Ron DeSantis's term ends.
During his celebration speech, Donalds thanked President Trump for his support and conveyed a message: "Mr. President, I want you to hear from Florida that we remain red."
He also promised to lower insurance premiums, facilitate access to housing, and ease the financial burden on families, commitments that had been prominently featured in his electoral campaign.
In that same statement, he assured that he will govern for all the residents of the state, including those who did not vote for him, and he summarized the beginning of his new political phase with a phrase: “Tonight we celebrate. Tomorrow we work.”
