A Cuban resident in Panama shared this Wednesday on Facebook her shock upon returning to the island and finding four oranges priced at 10,000 Cuban pesos at a small stand by the roadside, while traveling from the airport to her village.
Dayamy Ramos Romero, a professional photographer, shared in her post that the price left her speechless: "Without lying, four export oranges cost 10,000 pesos; that was my first trauma."
What troubled her the most was the comparison with the earnings of Cuban workers. According to her own calculations, that amount is equivalent to two salaries of any employee on the island, making the purchase of four fruits an expense that exceeds the monthly salary of most Cubans.
"My little nephews have never eaten those oranges, and their dad wanted to treat them to that," she said.
Ramos also listed other prices he found during his stay: a meat sandwich for 1,800 pesos, a soda for 650, a beer for 800, and a pack of chicken —when available— for 10,000 pesos. “It’s disastrous how people are living in that country,” he wrote.
The author concluded her publication with a direct appeal to those who have family in Cuba: "To understand what is happening, it is necessary to go and see. To all those who have relatives in Cuba and can do so, please help."
Several Cubans lamented the issue of high prices. "What a sadness what that country has become," wrote one user. Another pointed out that feminine hygiene products, a basic necessity, now cost 2,000 pesos, adding, "This is unacceptable."
Prices in Cuba are rising every day, turning almost any food item into a luxury. Another Cuban who visited the island paid 16,500 pesos for red onions and cilantro, and at the beginning of November a pumpkin cost 2,700 pesos.
The minimum wage was set at 3,210 pesos since July 2026. This Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the dollar is sold in the informal market for 915 pesos, which amounts to less than four dollars. The official average salary reached 7,354 pesos in August 2026, according to the National Office of Statistics and Information.
