A man identified as Sergio "N" was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined 481,100 Mexican pesos (approximately 25,800 dollars) for transporting four migrants in an irregular situation, including three Cubans, in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico.

The that the sentence was issued after a federal court established the defendant's responsibility in the crime of transporting irregular migrants.

The case dates back to October 2022, when Mexican soldiers arrested Sergio "N" at a security checkpoint set up on Federal Highway 54, in the municipality of Concepción del Oro.

The man was driving a vehicle coming from Mexico City headed to Monterrey, one of the major cities in the north of the country.

During the inspection, the military found three Cuban citizens and one Colombian who were unable to verify their legal status in Mexican territory.

Following the arrest, the Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor's Office (FECOR) initiated an investigation. The accused was presented before a judge, who declared the arrest legal and linked him to the proceedings.

Article 159 of the Mexican Migration Law establishes penalties of eight to 16 years in prison for those who transport foreigners for profit and to evade immigration checks. The law requires proof of the intention to obtain an economic benefit, meaning that the mere transportation of a person without immigration documentation does not automatically constitute this crime.

The statement from the FGR did not specify what happened subsequently with the three Cubans and the Colombian citizen found in the vehicle, nor did it provide details about their immigration status.
