A Cuban family resorted to a cart pulled by a pair of oxen to transport a relative's coffin to the cemetery, in an incident shared on social media this Saturday, the location of which has not been confirmed.

The images, posted by the page on Facebook "NiO Reporting a Crime", show the coffin on a cart in poor condition, moving through the rain.

The family would have had to arrange the transportation by their own means due to the inability to access appropriate funeral services, he noted.

The recording does not specify the date or location where the images were captured, although some reports that echoed the incident indicated that it may have occurred in the province of Holguín.

The post sparked outrage among users, who expressed their frustration at the loss of minimum conditions to say goodbye to their loved ones with dignity. "You can't even die with dignity anymore," one person commented. Others wrote, "Not even after death can you rest in peace in that Cuba," and "Our misery doesn't end even in death."

In July, a woman's coffin was transported to the cemetery in an ox-drawn cart in Cacocum, Holguín, because the hearse ran out of fuel. In February, out of the 26 funeral vehicles available in that province, only eight were operational.

Last week, a family from Madruga, in the province of Mayabeque, transported their grandfather's coffin in a cart pulled by a classic car, after waiting 10 hours, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., for a funeral vehicle that never arrived.

In February, a family from Velasco, in Gibara, improvised a cardboard coffin and adhesive tape due to the lack of coffins and transported the body on a tricycle to the cemetery. Earlier, in December 2025, a coffin was transported in a cage truck in San Luis, Santiago de Cuba.

The activist Lara Crofs warned in September that the funeral services in Cuba were "completely collapsed" and reported that access to a decent burial depended on informal payments or each family's connections.

On his part, the analyst Frank Rodríguez reported that in several cities, burials were being conducted in mass graves due to a lack of resources to afford a coffin.

This week, this report regarding the cemetery in Cárdenas was added, located in the province of Matanzas, where images of open vaults, visible skeletal remains, and widespread neglect were shared.

The crisis is due to issues that are recurring in different provinces, including fuel shortages, the deterioration of funeral vehicles, a lack of spare parts, and a deficit of coffins.
