Rebbeca Marie Gómez, professionally known as Becky G, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress of Mexican descent, born in Inglewood, California, on March 2, 1997. She experienced bullying at the age of 9 due to her work in the entertainment industry, and part of her education took place at home for this reason.
From a very young age, Becky was clear about her calling to be an actress, especially after the age of 9, when her parents fell into poverty and she decided to take on the responsibility of helping them. At just 11 years old, she participated in and won Sábado Gigante, hosted by Don Francisco, with a rendition of Selena's Techno Cumbia, a Mexican singer whom Becky acknowledges as her inspiration and to whom she has paid tribute on several occasions. When she was only 10 (in 2008), she began making appearances in short films and movies and created a YouTube account to upload covers of popular songs, while also starting to write her own music.
In 2011, at the age of 13, she joined the production duo The Jam, and after transforming into a trio, they worked on several song covers together, where she created her own lyrics. One of these, "Otis" (2011), caught the attention of renowned producer Dr. Luke, who praised the singer after seeing her in the music video for the same track, highlighting her personality and the sound of her voice “that comes out of the speakers,” as well as celebrating her guitar playing skills. Luke signed her to his record label, Kemosabe Records, and she would later begin working on her debut album.
Since then, the singer's career, which she defines as urban and pop, has continued to grow, and today her name is associated with well-known artists in the trap and reggaeton genres with whom she has signed multiple collaborations.
In 2017, her song "Mayores" featuring Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, with the catchy refrain "I like them older, the kind they call gentlemen," propelled her to fame, placing her on top charts worldwide. The singer and songwriter of the track, which has nearly two billion views on YouTube, has acknowledged that "Mayores" changed her life, and she has frequently addressed criticisms regarding the explicit lyrics, which have faced censorship in some parts of the world. "Mayores" won the Favorite Urban Song and Song of the Year categories at the Latin American Music Awards. The song is inspired by her current partner, the famous Los Angeles Galaxy soccer player, Sebastian Lletget.
Becky G's name is associated with several popular collaborations, such as "Dura" in 2018 alongside Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny, and Natti Natasha; "Mala" with Pitbull (2019); "Muchacha" with the Cuban duo Gente de Zona (2020); "Tiempo Pa Olvidar" with Abraham Mateo (2020); and "Perdiendo la cabeza" (2020) featuring Carlos Rivera, among others. In 2019, Becky G and Akon teamed up for a collaboration titled "Cómo no," a reggaeton track accompanied by a music video inspired by Cuba.
In June 2020, Black Eyed Peas announced an album featuring collaborations with Shakira, Maluma, and Becky G, among others.
In March 2019, Becky participated in Teletón USA, performing an emotional acoustic version of "Stand By Me" alongside her brother, who has autism, in front of the viewers.
In 2016, she won the Favorite Female Artist - Pop/Rock and Female Artist of the Year categories at the Latin American Music Awards. She has been nominated for the Lo Nuestro Award 8 times between 2015 and 2019. From 2014 to 2016, she won 4 awards at the Radio Disney Music Awards.
