Rebbeca Marie Gómez, known artistically as Becky G, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress of Mexican descent, born in Inglewood, California, on March 2, 1997. She experienced bullying when she was 9 years old due to her work in the entertainment industry, and part of her education took place at home because of this.
From a very young age, Becky was clear about her calling to be an actress, especially after the age of 9, when her parents fell into poverty and she took on the responsibility and commitment to work to help them. At just 11 years old, she competed in and won on Sábado Gigante, hosted by Don Francisco, with her imitation of Selena's Techno Cumbia, the Mexican singer whom Becky recognizes as her inspiration and to whom she has paid tribute on several occasions. At the age of 10 (in 2008), she began appearing in short films and movies and created a YouTube account to post covers of popular songs online, as well as starting to write her own songs.
In 2011, at the age of 13, she joined the production duo The Jam, and after they became a trio, they worked together on several song covers where she created her own lyrics. One of them, "Otis" (2011), caught the attention of renowned producer Dr. Luke, who praised the singer's personality and the sound of her voice, saying it "comes out of the speakers," as well as celebrating that she also played guitar. Luke signed her to his record label Kemosabe Records, and she would later begin work on her debut album.
Since then, the singer's career, who defines her style as urban and pop, has continued to grow, and today her name is associated with renowned artists in the trap and reggaeton genres with whom she has signed multiple collaborations.
In 2017, her song "Mayores" featuring Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny, with the catchy chorus "I like them older, the kind they call gentlemen," propelled her to fame, placing her atop the music charts around the globe. The singer and songwriter, whose track has garnered nearly two billion views on YouTube, has acknowledged that "Mayores" changed her life and has frequently addressed criticisms regarding the song's explicit lyrics, which have been censored in some parts of the world. "Mayores" won the awards for Favorite Urban Song and Song of the Year at the Latin American Music Awards. The song is inspired by her current partner, the famous footballer from the Los Angeles Galaxy, Sebastian Lletget.
Becky G's name is associated with other collaborations on popular tracks such as: "Dura" in 2018 alongside Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny, and Natti Natasha, "Mala" with Pitbull (2019), "Muchacha" with the Cuban duo Gente de Zona (2020), "Tiempo Pa Olvidar" with Abraham Mateo (2020), and "Perdiendo la cabeza" (2020) alongside Carlos Rivera, among others. In 2019, Becky G and Akon joined forces on a collaboration titled "Cómo no," a reggaeton song accompanied by a music video inspired by Cuba.
In June 2020, Black Eyed Peas announced an album featuring collaborations with Shakira, Maluma, and Becky G, among others.
In March 2019, Becky participated in Teletón USA, singing an emotional acoustic version of Stand By Me alongside her brother, who has autism, in front of the viewers.
In 2016, she won in the categories of Favorite Female Artist - Pop/Rock and Female Artist of the Year at the Latin American Music Awards. She has been nominated 8 times for the Lo Nuestro Award between 2015 and 2019. Between 2014 and 2016, she won 4 awards at the Radio Disney Music Awards.
