Rebbeca Marie Gómez, known artistically as Becky G, is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress of Mexican descent, born in Inglewood, California, on March 2, 1997. She experienced bullying when she was 9 years old due to her work in the entertainment industry, and part of her education took place at home for this reason.
From a very young age, Becky was clear about her calling to be an actress, especially starting at the age of 9, after her parents fell into poverty and she took on the responsibility and commitment to work to help them. At just 11 years old, she competed and won on Sábado Gigante, hosted by Don Francisco, with her imitation of the Techno Cumbia song by Selena, the Mexican singer whom Becky recognizes as her inspiration and has paid tribute to on other occasions. At the age of 10 (2008), she began appearing in short films and movies and created a YouTube account to post covers of popular songs online, in addition to starting to write her own songs.
In 2011, at the age of 13, she joined the production duo The Jam, and as a trio, they worked on various song covers together, where she created versions with her own lyrics. One of these, "Otis" (2011), caught the attention of renowned producer Dr. Luke, who praised the singer after seeing her in the music video for the same song, noting her personality and the sound of her voice "that comes out of the speakers," as well as celebrating the fact that she also played guitar. Luke signed her to his record label, Kemosabe Records, and she would soon begin working on her debut album.
Since then, the singer's career, which she defines as urban and pop, has continued to grow, and today her name is associated with well-known artists in the trap and reggaeton genres with whom she has signed multiple collaborations.
In 2017, her song "Mayores" featuring the Puerto Rican Bad Bunny, with the catchy chorus "I like them older, the ones they call gentlemen," catapulted her to fame, placing her at the top of the charts worldwide. The singer and songwriter of the track, which has nearly two billion views on YouTube, has acknowledged that "Mayores" changed her life, and on several occasions, she has addressed the criticism surrounding the explicit lyrics of the song, which has faced censorship in some parts of the world. "Mayores" won in the categories of Favorite Urban Song and Song of the Year at the Latin American Music Awards. The song is inspired by her current partner, the famous Los Angeles Galaxy soccer player, Sebastian Lletget.
Becky G's name is associated with other collaborations on popular tracks such as: "Dura" in 2018 alongside Daddy Yankee, Bad Bunny, and Natti Natasha; "Mala" with Pitbull (2019); "Muchacha" with the Cuban duo Gente de Zona (2020); "Tiempo Pa Olvidar" with Abraham Mateo (2020); and "Perdiendo la cabeza" (2020) with Carlos Rivera, among others. In 2019, Becky G and Akon teamed up for a collaboration titled "Cómo no," a reggaeton track that was accompanied by a music video inspired by Cuba.
In June 2020, Black Eyed Peas announced an album featuring collaborations with, among others, Shakira, Maluma, and Becky G.
In March 2019, Becky participated in Teletón USA, performing an emotional acoustic version of "Stand By Me" alongside her brother, who has autism, in front of the viewers.
In 2016, she won in the categories of Favorite Female Artist - Pop/Rock and Female Artist of the Year at the Latin American Music Awards. She has been nominated 8 times for the Premio Lo Nuestro between 2015 and 2019. Between 2014 and 2016, she won 4 awards at the Radio Disney Music Awards.
