“I live regularly pal time, stuck in the garbage, picking up rags, picking up old shoes, picking up whatever he sees to be able to live,” highlights an elderly man over 80 years old, whose terrible living conditions have been summarized in this report, carried out by Cubanet.
Fabio and Silvia are an elderly couple who live in a house that is literally falling on top of them. The pension is not enough to live on and every day the old man goes through the garbage in search of raw materials or anything that could help them "to get food."
The conditions in which they live are inhumane to such an extent that they have to bathe while sitting on the toilet because they cannot stand in that part of the house.
Even though they are afraid because of the terrible conditions of the home, the old woman argues that they have to stay there because they cannot be on the street.
“I have not received anything from the Government, not a place or anything,” says Silvia, adding that they do not earn enough to be able to fix the home.
"They don't even give me any subsidy to be able to solve it," she concludes, and emphasizes that she feels abandoned because there is no support for her husband or her, who are two elderly people.
The devastating story of this elderly couple once again shows the serious housing crisis that the Island is suffering, where thousands of Cubans live in buildings in deplorable conditions, some even declared uninhabitable due to a high risk of collapse.
