Note:
La Frita Cubana is a type of hamburger that was consumed in Cuba in the past. It is no longer very popular on the Island because it is difficult to obtain its ingredients. They were eaten at any time of the day and had high demand. It is believed that the first fritas stand in Havana was at the corner of Paseo and Zapata, at the edge of El Vedado.
Ingredients:
  • 2 pounds of ground pork
  • 1 pound of beef
  • 1 tablespoon of binding seasoning (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper
  • To make the battered onion:

    • ½ teaspoon of garlic paste
    • ½ cup of wheat flour
    • 1 pinch of salt
    • 1 pinch of pepper
    • 1 large onion
    • 1 egg
    • 1 splash of beer
Instructions:

Mix the ground meats with the pepper, garlic paste, and a little salt. Form the burgers and set them aside.

In a pan, heat oil. When it’s at a high temperature, add the hamburgers and avoid pressing them down. Let them cook over medium heat on both sides until they reach your desired level of doneness.

To prepare the frita:

Open the bread in half and heat it lightly in a pan or sandwich press. Add sauce of your choice, then the fried food, cheese, and mayonnaise.

Serve it with traditional thinly sliced french fries or the crispy onion rings proposed by our chef.

For the batter of the onion:

Prepare a mixture with all the ingredients and set it aside in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it. Avoid keeping it in the fridge for more than 20 minutes.

Cut the rings of the white onion to a thickness of about 2 cm. Place them in cold water until you are ready to fry them.

Remove the onion rings from the water and dip them into the mixture you prepared earlier to coat them.

In a pot, heat oil and when it is very hot, add the onion rings coated with the previously mentioned mixture. Drain them lightly so they fry nicely. When they are golden, remove them and drain on paper towels.

Enjoy your meal!!
