A powerful tornado hit several locations in the capital of Cuba on Sunday afternoon. According to the information published in official media and on social networks, Santo Suárez, Luyanó, Vía Blanca, Regla and Chibás are some of the neighborhoods in Havana that have suffered the most damage, although a good part of the capital isWithout eleectricity, due to the rains and strong winds.
Information provided by the Institute of Meteorology (Insmet), viaCubadebate, assures that the tornado occurred "as part of abaja extratropical that descended from the southeastern Gulf of Mexico to the western region of the country", which has leftwind gusts exceeding 100km per hour andhail fall.
"The strength of the tornado's winds can be compared to that of a category 4 or 5 hurricane, although its impact is more focused," official sources added.
"People felt like the sound of a jet-powered airplane and changes in environmental pressure," Armando Caymares, an Insmet specialist, told Cuban media.
From social networks, several residents of the Cuban capital have shown images of the destruction that the tornado has caused in Havana in its path.
"Strong tornado in Havana. It caught me on the street, in the car, with my wife and children. And I had to dodge fallen bushes, floods, strong winds. Until I was able to get home! We were very scared. I'm very sorry the number of people affected right now. The official Cuban media assures, however, that the real extent of the damage can only be counted when dawn breaks.
Cuban authorities had warned of the occurrence of heavy rains and winds in the west of the country, where from the early hours of this Sunday winds began to be felt with a sustained speed of 50-55 km/h.
The National Civil Defense General Staff, for its part, has issued early warning notice No. 1 "about the complex meteorological situation in the western half of Cuba."
