The Brazilian telenovela "Amor con Amor se paga" was broadcast in Cuba in the 1990s. Among its many characters, it was Nonó Correia, a stingy family man, who captured the hearts of the Cuban audience.
Nonó Correia came to dance at Trompo's house
The soap opera aired during the Special Period, a time when Cubans saved and scavenged for everything imaginable in this world. Perhaps that's why the most beloved miser of Brazilian television slipped through the wide door into our homes.
I remember that Nonó wanted to make use of everything that could be recycled, and at home, we would laugh because that little can of condensed milk had a handle and was now a cup; a chicken could feed a family for a week, and many places had locks on their refrigerators.
Let's talk about the novel
“Love Begets Love” is a production by Rede Globo from 1984. It was written by Ivani Ribeiro as an adaptation of the novel “Camomila e Bem-me-quer.” It tells the story of a very stingy, irritable, and tragicomic man who hides a treasure in his own home.
Nonó Correia's bad temper begins to change when he takes in an orphaned child, studious, intelligent, and kind-hearted, who restores his faith in love.

Other memorable lead characters from this telenovela were: Tomás, Nonó's son, played by the Brazilian heartthrob Edson Celulari; Mariana, portrayed by actress Claudia Ohana; and Frosina (Berta Lorán), the charming employee who won Nonó's heart.
Nonó Correia was a beloved figure in Cuba
Ary Fontoura is the actor who brought the character Nonó Correia to life. In addition to his acting career, Fontoura has made a significant impact as a writer, musician, and television director. His characters enjoy great popularity in Brazil and around the world.
He was born on January 27, 1933, in Curitiba. He comes from a family of Italian descent and started in theater and circus at a very young age. His first television novel was "Passo dos ventos" in 1968.
More than 40 Brazilian telenovelas and several movies in her resume
In cinema, one of his most controversial roles was his portrayal of former president Lula Da Silva in "Policía Federal, la ley es para todos." This film premiered in 2017 and recreates the Lava Jato operation, the largest investigation into corruption and money laundering in Brazilian history.
In Cuba, Ary Fontoura is also admired for other characters, such as Mayor Florindo in Roque Santeiro, for example. However, none resonated as deeply as the stingy and tragicomic Nonó Correia, perhaps because of the saying "Love is repaid with love."
