In Ciego de Ávila, families have begun to receive standardized bread of only 50 grams, instead of the usual 80, due to the shortage of flour in Cuba.
The official Yadiel Pérez Téllez, coordinator of Programs and Objectives in the provincial government, explained to the local press that they do not know when they will be able to produce bread again within “normality”, although they assure that “to the extent that the necessary flour arrives in Cuba and we are fully sure that we can restore its coverage, we would return to the usual, that is , to 80 grams.”
The official comments that this change in size should not affect the quality of the bread, although it isone of the products most criticized by Cubans.
Pérez Téllez explains that the price of the popularly called bread from the winery decreases to 0.85 cents, although he clarifies that in some units 1.00 pesos are still charged.
The school snack bread remains at 80 grams, and also with an offer of 50 grams, the rest is destined for social consumption, adds the official.
The shortage of wheat flour has produced an unsustainable situation, generating criticism among citizens, who must pay for a product that has no quality and is made with cassava flour, banana, among others.
Last June,Cubans were left without bread from the basic basket for several days after the country ran out of flour for its production, as a result of a shortage that has continued.
