A boat withfour immigrants, all men, arrived last Friday atCayman Islands, as confirmed by authorities.
The Customs and Border Control (CBC) of the British Overseas Territory issued astatement in which he reports that at approximately 6 a.m. On September 22, a boat with four migrants, who are detained, arrived in Spot Bay, Cayman Brac.
The official note does not indicate the nationality of the people, but judging by the type and condition of the vessel in which they made landfall,It could be presumed that they are rafters from Cuba, who mostly leave the country in rustic boats with the intention of generally arriving in Florida, United States.
The CBC assured that “all people will be processed in accordance with the processing protocols” of that entity.
This is not the first reported case ofrafters arriving in the Cayman Islands. This dependent territory of the United Kingdom is located in the Antilles, about 241 kilometers (150 miles) south of Cuba.
The exodus of Cubans continues unstoppable, more than two years after unleashing theworst migration crisis in the country's history. To reach the destination preferred by Cubans par excellence - the United States -, the majority resort to irregular routes, such as the dangerous journey by sea, specifically crossing the Strait of Florida.
A few days before the end of fiscal year 2023 (October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023),More than 12 thousand Cubans arrived on US soil through irregular routes, and of them,5,937 did so by sea.
More than 7,000 rafters have been intercepted at sea by the US Coast Guard (USCG), in the last 11 months, andreturned to Cuba. The US authorities expeditiously repatriate the Cuban immigrants who are captured, who immediately haverestricted access to immigration benefits for the next five years.
Many rafters take a wrong turn in their desire to reach US shores and get lost at sea. In the luckiest cases, instead of reaching the north,They disembark in other territories, such as Mexico and Cayman Islands.
