Cuban-German political prisoner hospitalized after brutal beating in Havana prison

Activists and relatives of Cuban political prisoner Luis Frómeta Compte denounced that the man was the victim of a brutal beating in the Combinado del Este prison, located in Havana.

According to information provided by the Madrid-based NGO Prisoners Defenders, other inmates alerted the family about the beating suffered by Frómeta Compte, 62 years old andGerman nationality.

Brizaida Abad Igarzs, a relative of Frómeta Compte, said that they were informed that the political prisoner had injuries, including a fractured nasal septum, and had been transferred to the prison's medical office since Thursday.

The severity of the injuries forced the authorities to take him to a hospital outside the prison, but he has already been returned to the Combinado del Este, he said in a Facebook direct from the prison, where he went to ask for explanations from the agents who work there.

Janie Frómeta Compte, daughter of the political prisoner residing in Germany, broadcast a video on TikTok denouncing the events and questioning the actions of the German Government and the European Parliament.

Frómeta Compte was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2022 for alleged sedition, after participating in the demonstration on July 12, 2021 in La Güinera.

Resident in Germany since 1985, he was in Cuba on a family visit when he was detained. His daughter, Janie Frómeta, has previously denounced the inhumane conditions in which her father is in prison, including mistreatment and deficiencies in medical care.
