A total of 13 Cuban migrants denouncedan extortion attempt by officials of the National Migration Institute (INM) inTapachula, south of Mexico.
The Cuban Zuselmi García López, reported to local media that she and 12 other Cubans were detained by members of the INM at the Viva México ejido checkpoint.
The agents took their passports and asked them for 1,500 Mexican pesos to return them and let them continue their route.
“They didn't stop here because we were left behind in the caravan and we took a van to go ahead and wait for them here, and they stopped us here and took our documents,”explained García López.
“They told us that they were not going to give them because they were going to provide us with transportation to Tuxtla, where they would file the legal papers for us to continue. We told them no, that we wanted to continue in the caravan, and they didn't want to give it to us," he added.
The Cubans requested the support of local activist Luis García Villagran, general director of the Center for Human Dignification A.C., to help them recover the documents.
Finally, the agents were publicly displayed and were forced to return the passports in the presence of elements of the National Guard and local media.
The Cubans were able to join the migrant caravan and continue their journey.
