A food donation from the Chinese authorities for their community in Cuba was received this week by more than a hundred elderly people, who see in the donation not only a contribution to the celebration of the Lunar New Year, but also help in the midst of of the serious food crisis facing the island.
The beneficiaries received rice, flour and oil, and said they were overwhelmed by the size of the aid, which will reach three homes of grandparents of natural Chinese and descendants, from the Chinese associations Min Chih Tang and Lung Kong, in Havana and Ciego de Avila.
"We are surprised to have received such a large donation," he told Xinhua Julio Wong, descendant of emigrants from the Asian nation on the Island.
Also a member of the board of directors of the Chinese Association, Min Chih Tang, described the aid as "a great contribution" and thanked the attention that Beijing provides to Cuban seniors.
The Chinese ambassador to Cuba was present at the delivery ceremony, Ma Hui, who highlighted his Government's interest and concern for overseas Chinese.
"On the occasion of the upcoming Dragon Year Spring Festival"I am extremely pleased to visit them," said the diplomat, who highlighted the importance of these donations, which take place in the midst of the political, economic and military alliance between Havana and Beijing.
Likewise, according to Xinhua, Hui assured that China's development will bring more prosperity to overseas Chinese in 2024.
The aid was directed to one of the most vulnerable population groups in the current economic crisis that Cuba is experiencing, where the salary is not enough, much less the economic pensions that the island's government gives to its senior citizens, who they see as money cannot buy basic products.
Julio Fong, president of the Chung Wah Association, said that the Chinese community in Cuba trusts that Beijing's alliance with Havana will bring benefits for both peoples.
"I want to express the support of the Chinese community in Cuba for our motherland and we trust in the shared development between both countries," said the old man, who added about the donation: "This loving help will improve the quality of life of our elderly." .
In the context of the XV BRICS Summit in the South African city of Johannesburg, which brought together representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, held last August, The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, promised his Cuban counterpart Miguel Díaz-Canel to increase "strategic cooperation" with the island, immersed in a deep crisis.
China is willing to work with Cuba to continuously deepen political mutual trust, expand practical cooperation and intensify strategic coordination, so as to promote the new and unceasing development of special friendly relations between the two parties and the two countries, Jinping said.
