The feminist platforms YosíTeCreo in Cuba (YSTCC) and the Alas Tensas Gender Observatory (OGAT) have described as "strange" the circumstances surroundingthe death of Tania Reyes Martínez, who died this Wednesday after falling, during his birthday celebration, from the building where he lived in Santiago de Cuba.
"Tania died on the night of February 28 under strange circumstances, in the building where she lived, located in the April 21 military community," a joint publication from both platforms reported this Friday.
"All the sources consulted by the OGAT and YSTCC observatories provide imprecise elements that make it impossible to determine whether or not it was a femicide. For now, her case remains in the category of: 'Access to the police report is needed'"added the publication about the incident that occurred in Mangos de Baraguá, in the Mella municipality of Santiago.
The platforms pointed out that "the way in which Tania died, supposedly 'by falling down the stairs or from the balcony', apparently in the presence of a partner or ex-partner, without other eyewitnesses... resembles another imprecise death of a woman that occurred on June 4, 2023, that of Yaiden Bodaños Morales, in the El Naranjal neighborhood, in the city of Matanzas".
In the final segment of their publication, both platforms urged"to incorporate indicators of gender violence in police investigation protocols, in this case those of 'violent' and 'accidental' deaths of women, recognize the figure of femicides and review with this approach the so-called accidental deaths, which are in increase in women", according to the Health Statistical Yearbooks.
The tragic death this Wednesday of Tania Reyes Martínez, a woman from Santiago who died on her birthday after falling from the fifth floor of her building, has generated hundreds of comments on social networks in the last few hours and an unusual and rapid response from a official profile calling what happened an "accident", and subtracting any hint of criminality in what happened.
"About him accident that occurred in the Mella municipality, where a local resident died, we were able to obtain witness testimonies of what happened [by] neighbors and acquaintances of the victim, who allowed us to clarify the circumstances in which this unfortunate event occurred," he began
Apublication on the official Facebook profile "Héroes del Moncada" described that Tania"He was at home celebrating his birthday, drinking alcoholic beverages and was making a broth for the celebration."
The text added that at a time when the woman left from the apartment "to move the coal, with which he was cooking in the patio of the building and while he was going down the stairs, he lost his balance and fell from the fifth floor, losing his life due to the injuries suffered."
The official publication then added that "the husband is not detained nor is he responsible for anything" and that they both got along very well.
The rapid clarification of the official profile - which systematically ignores other bloody events in the province - seems to be motivated by the comments that affected the image and reputation of the deceased woman's husband, who is a soldier.
This is a fact with hundreds of criteria expressed so far and about which unfortunately, despite the official clarification, there continues to be few certainties and a single tragic reality: the death of a woman who, unfortunately, has died. the day of his birthday.
