AndMiami resident of Cuban origin died after being hit by a driver who left him stranded and fled in Little Havana on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred at 8:39 pm, southwest of Eighth Avenue and Eighth Street. The body ofTomas Brito, who lived just a block away and had left his apartment to go to 7 Eleven to buy cigarettes.
Miami firefighters rushed him to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, but he died shortly after.
A video recorded by a security camera at a local business shows Brito crossing the middle of the street, from north to south, with his cell phone in his hand.
Suddenly a speeding car hits him and throws him into the air. When he fell, the body became hooked on the rear tire of the car, which continued moving without stopping.
Miami police said that the driver would not have had to respond, since the victim was not supposed to cross that area, but since he fled the scene, he will be taken to the authorities.
"If the owner or the person driving had stopped, he would not have been facing charges, but by leaving the scene, he will now be facing very serious charges," he toldUnivision 23 Mike Vega, spokesperson for the Department.
The car involved in the accident was found abandoned Wednesday in the area of Coral Way and Southwest 14th Avenue. It is a BMW that has heavy damage to the front, including the windshield.
HeThe owner of the vehicle reported it stolen two hours after the incident.
Tomás turned 40 last week and lived with his mother. In addition to her, she is survived by two teenage children: a boy and a girl, who reside in West Palm Beach, as well as a brother and an uncle.
