Omar Munoz Alvarez, prominent sports announcer of the station COCO, dies

The Cuban sports announcer Omar Muñoz Alvarez, prominent voice on the Havana station COCO, died on Sunday due to respiratory arrest and was buried this Monday.

Friends and colleagues of Omar remembered him on their Facebook profiles, with notes of regret for the sudden loss.

The Cuban sports journalist also said about him Yasel Porto that “despite illnesses, age and complexities in today's Cuba, he remained the main voice of the program Sports Dawn from COCO”.

Recalling the aforementioned program, user Germán Castillo added that Muñoz Álvarez was “the heart and soul of Sports Dawn, the sports program of the COCO”.

Likewise, he recalled that they recently communicated on the birthday of the deceased, on April 28. He said that this communication and the “invitation to see each other at the activity on the 11th” will be kept as a farewell.

Muñoz Álvarez was buried in the Colón Necropolis. His farewell duel was performed by the martial arts master Roberto Vargas Lee, since Omar, in addition to baseball, was a defender of this sport in Cuba, Porto noted in his writing.

The news of the death of this prominent sports announcer joins that of the arrival to the United States of another sports storytelling professional, especially baseball, the renowned Andy Vargas. They both shared a passion for Industriales and worked in the COCO.
