Beatriz Johnson, First Secretary of the Party in Santiago de Cuba, warned during a meeting of communists that the regime will not hesitate to combat crime and corruption, sending a clear message to intensify the fight due to the rise in crime in the province.
The officialist channel Tele Turquino broadcasted a report this Tuesday featuring statements by Johnson: "What more do we have to wait for to act?" expressed the leader, showing the concern of the leadership towards the evident increase in criminal activities in the so-called "Cradle of the Revolution."
"We do not hesitate. Our hand has never trembled! And it will not be now that our hands or legs will shake," expressed Johnson, who in March was subjected to ridicule for his actions in response to the popular discontent that sparked the protests which began on the 17th of that month.
"And we must do what we have to do because what is being defended is very important," statements that reinforce the regime's fear that currently the Cuban people are experiencing one of the worst economic crises ever seen, which could trigger massive protests at any moment.
Scarcity and crisis manifest in Santiago de Cuba through an increase in violence and crime, a reality that, although the regime tries to hide, is public knowledge thanks to activists, journalists, and independent media, as well as citizen reports on social networks.
Recently, a man was captured by neighbors of the San Pedrito neighborhood in the city of Santiago de Cuba, after allegedly snatching a cell phone from a girl.
In recent days, the body of a man with signs of violence was found next to a bridge in the downtown area.
Apparently, the man was beaten, strangled, and then thrown off the bridge known as El Elevado, explained a local source.
At the beginning of the month, a teenager was hospitalized after suffering a sexual assault in the city of Santiago de Cuba.
The incident occurred at night when the minor was at a street party in the Artes y Oficios neighborhood.
