Agents from the Refugio County Sheriff's Office (RCSO) in the state of Texas arrested two Cubans who robbed a warehouse in Tivoli, according to official reports.
Mauroys Leiva Silva, 51, and Jesús Sorrebea Meléndez, 57, are currently detained, accused of the robbery committed at a store-warehouse on June 17th, as reported by Univision.
County officials initiated an investigation into a possible robbery at the business, in which two suspects were involved. After arresting the individuals, authorities discovered that they had criminal records.
Leiva, who was granted asylum and permanent residence in the United States, has been arrested and charged six times for credit/debit card abuse and participating in organized criminal activities. Three of the charges resulted in convictions for felony offenses.
The RCSO agents contacted the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and subsequently obtained copies of Leiva's convictions and other criminal records.
Both agencies collaborated to present a case with the purpose of revoking Leiva's permanent resident status, through Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
The Cuban will appear before a federal immigration court, where his status will be determined.
For his part, Sorrebea is an undocumented immigrant, according to the RCSO, and was placed in ICE custody.
"I am very proud of our agents for making an additional effort to investigate this matter. Cases like this are the reasons why we participate in the 287(g) program," declared Refugio County Sheriff Raul "Pinky" Gonzales, as reported by the digital edition of the Refugio County Press.
This started with a call to one of our deputies who was off-duty and, due to his dedication, he answered the call. He and his colleagues arrested these individuals, our investigators uncovered their criminal records, and the deputy in charge of the 287(g) program concluded the investigation. This is teamwork at its finest," the sheriff emphasized.
Last week, the Cuban Duniesky González, 37 years old and residing in Dallas, was sentenced to 50 years in prison for leading a fuel theft network in nine counties in Texas.
