Citing the economic crisis affecting the country, the Cuban government announced restrictions on the entertainment options for this summer and emphasized the defense of culture as one of the fundamental principles of this season, while completely ignoring another part of the story: the constant power outages that the people are experiencing.
In the official program Round Table, Raúl Fornés Valenciano, first vice president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (INDER), acknowledged that the stage will take place in a complex economic situation that "results in certain restrictions in terms of offers, but there is a diverse range of activities planned."
In this first broadcast on the topic, Fornés argued that the period will have among its principles "the defense of national identity, and the strengthening of the customs and traditions of each territory."
Likewise, he commented that "we will focus our greatest attention on vulnerable neighborhoods, areas of the Turquino Plan, coastal communities, among others," according to Cubadebate, a digital platform serving the regime.
The Deputy Minister of Culture, Lizette Martínez Luzardo, referred to the activities that sector will carry out during the summer, such as the International Biennial of Political Humor, taking place in Havana until June 28.
He mentioned that "more than 2,200 cultural institutions will be open in the summer," but forgot to reveal the high prices in many of these activities to the detriment of the low wages in the country.
Meanwhile, María del Pilar Macías Rutes, General Director of Operations and Quality at the Ministry of Tourism, stated that "the jewel in the crown this season is camping," when it is known that the majority of resources are allocated to international tourism.
The experience and perception of many Cubans about the tourist services offered by the Popular Camping Business Group have been evident in the comments left in 2023 by several users on the social network Facebook.
And all those words linger in the air when remembering the statements of the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel himself: there are no guarantees that the summer months will pass without disruptions in the electricity service.
The president acknowledged it in the YouTube space hosted by him, where he addressed the situation of electricity generation and the projections in the short, medium, and long terms.
Díaz-Canel reiterated what the Electric Union (UNE) announced weeks ago, that power outages will increase due to the rise in maintenance work at the thermoelectric plants.
