Hundreds of people gathered on Sunday afternoon at the San Juan Methodist Church in Santiago de Cuba to celebrate a special worship service in honor of the healthcare workers in that province.
"We honor them for their effort and dedication as we pray for their lives. The vast majority of them have received Christ as their Lord and Savior. To God alone be the glory," wrote Pastor Darlon Bermúdez on social media.
The cult of "The Beloved Doctor" took place at four in the afternoon, and numerous people gathered inside and around the church for the celebration, during which the doctors wore their medical gowns.
Images disseminated by Pastor Darlon Bermúdez confirmed the extraordinary turnout at the event of the Methodist Church of San Juan located near the central Céspedes Park in Santiago de Cuba.
Journalist Yosmany Mayeta echoed the celebration, which he described as a "motivating initiative" and urged to remember that "scarcity and government neglect prevail in the hospitals in the city," making the current situation even more delicate.
The communicator from Santiago pointed out that "doctors and healthcare personnel are always ready to assist those in need, even though the lack of resources does not allow them to effectively carry out their work."
For weeks, Santiago de Cuba has been experiencing a complex epidemiological situation with the confirmed circulation of four viruses: dengue, influenza, oropouche, and SARS-CoV-2, the latter being the cause of COVID-19, as reported by official sources.
Aris Batalla, representative of the Red Cross in Santiago de Cuba, reported last week that the presence of these viruses puts the population at risk, which must take extreme preventive measures amid an extreme scarcity of medications such as painkillers and antipyretics.
The national director of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), Francisco Durán, acknowledged that the country does not have fuel to fumigate against mosquitoes, amid a growing presence of the Oropouche Virus in Cuba.
In that context, it was revealed that the provincial hospital Saturnino Lora in Santiago de Cuba is collapsed, without beds or resources, to attend to the increasing influx of patients.
It is not the first time that the Methodist Church of San Juan celebrates a crowded service, at the end of May, a large group of motorcyclists gathered to pray for the motorcyclists of Santiago de Cuba.
