Cuban boxer Erislandy Álvarez won his second match in the Olympic Games on Monday in the 63.5 kg category and secured his advance to the quarterfinals.
The 24-year-old from Cienfuegos defeated Jugurtha Ait Bekka from Algeria by unanimous decision from the five judges, who recognized his superiority in all three rounds.
In the first round, the score was 10-9 in favor of the Cuban. In the second, he managed to score the first protective count against the Algerian, and he widened the difference with a similar score of 10-9. Finally, in the third round, four judges voted 10-9 and the fifth voted 10-8.
In this way, Álvarez is one win away from securing a medal for Cuba in the sport of boxing.
The boxer made his debut on Saturday in Paris with a victory, defeating John Ume from Papua New Guinea by TKO.
