After two days without changes in the values of the three reference currencies in the Cuban informal market, this Thursday the Convertible Currency (MLC) opened with a slight decline after remaining at the same value for ten days.
At 7:00 a.m. (local time) on this August 8, the virtual currency used by the Cuban government has dropped by two pesos, moving from 280 to 278 CUP.
The Freely Convertible Peso had shown signs of stability after remaining valued at 280 CUP since July 29.
In the case of the dollar and the euro, both currencies remain unchanged today for the third consecutive day: the dollar is quoted at 320 pesos and the euro at 330.
The relative stability of recent days in the informal market comes after an article published in Granma last week threatened Cubans who engage in the street buying and selling of foreign currency with up to five years in prison.
"These actions are punishable by imprisonment for two to five years, or a fine of five hundred to a thousand units, or both," pointed out the official source. It also stated that any transaction of sale, assignment, transmission, or acquisition of foreign currency "is illegal and constitutes a crime."
