The lack of resources and care in the workplace in Cuba was exposed through a video that denounces how workers from Comunales in Havana collect garbage without gloves or other protections.
The video was filmed at the intersection of 15th Street with L and M in Vedado, where there are enormous garbage dumps.
According to the reporting neighbor, not only is the garbage from residents in the area thrown there, but also the waste from a nearby market, where even parts of animals are disposed of.
"These gentlemen you see here, under what conditions are they working, because the rotting, the accumulation of organic waste, including grass and other debris, is terrible," said the complainant identified on Facebook as Marilyn Saiz Martínez.
In the video, you can see a worker throwing the garbage accumulated on the street into a truck by hand, while another person receives it at the top of the vehicle.
A third person, apparently the driver, hides to avoid being captured by the camera, without helping his companions.
"There is no glove, I don't believe we are in such a big crisis that they can't provide protection for our health, because they are trying to protect us, but, under what conditions?" the person pointed out.
Likewise, it was evident that they lacked work tools, such as a broom, a shovel, or a dustpan to be able to gather the waste.
Havana is facing an alarming situation due to the massive accumulation of garbage, which has been exacerbated by the lack of fuel, personnel, and collection equipment.
In the city, only 68% of the waste generated is collected, while the rest remains in the streets, creating infection hotspots and increasing the risk of fires due to the release of methane gas.
Of this waste, only about 40% is recovered for recycling, leaving a large volume of garbage in public spaces, worsening the already serious epidemiological situation on the island due to the proliferation of rats, cockroaches, and mosquitoes.
Recently, the Municipal Administrative Council of Cerro made an alliance with the micro, small, and medium enterprise (Mipyme) Talleres Delis to improve communal hygiene, reported the official Canal Habana.
Apparently, the main contribution of this private business will be in improving the fleet of equipment involved in waste collection, prioritizing the main avenues of the area, the official media reported.
In a country where the healthcare system has become vulnerable, largely due to the lack of hygiene in shared spaces, contracting an illness poses major complications for medical treatment, which is also inadequate.
