Boca Ciega, a neighborhood located in front of one of the most beautiful beaches in East Havana, is in a state of alarming neglect.
The YouTuber Alejandro, known for his channel Literalmente cubano, recently shared a video showcasing the abandonment that the houses in Boca Ciega, a ghost town in the east of the capital, are suffering.
This community in the 1950s housed private homes. It was a residential area in a thriving coastal enclave, but it has transformed into a desolate scene.
These homes, mostly vacation properties, were expropriated in 1960 by the regime. For a time, the authorities used them for vacation rentals for workers from state agencies. Then they took them away from the agencies, and the Ministry of Tourism took control, increasing the rental values.
At this moment, they stopped being a "product for the enjoyment of workers" and began to be for those who could afford them. However, this was still not enough for the regime. Their maintenance is expensive, and they ended up being left to their fate, turning Boca Ciega into a ghost town.
The deterioration of these houses and apartments is evident. The structures that were once home to powerful families are now in ruins, with moldy facades, crumbling walls, and collapsed roofs.
This scenario is incomprehensible considering the housing crisis affecting the Cuban capital. Instead of taking advantage of these spaces to alleviate the housing deficit, the authorities have allowed the neighborhood to fall into neglect.
Despite its privileged location facing a beach with crystal clear waters, Boca Ciega is not currently of interest to the Ministry of Tourism or local authorities.
The lack of maintenance and a strategy to revitalize the area has led Boca Ciega to become another symbol of the regime's neglect.
